Hi I have a 1.2v Punto Active 2004, 30,000 miles.

Last Friday my gear selector cable broke and I had it towed to the garage. Fast forward a week, and the cable problem has been fixed.

Now when I picked the car up from the garage, the power steering was kaput - the steering wheel vibrating and the motor pulsing like mad.

I'll be honest - I know nothing about cars so I'm in the hands of the mechanic completely. He looked at the motor and told me I needed a new steering column. He pulled out a 2nd hand steering column (airbag already deployed ) and suggested he try replacing it with that.

I know no more than that at the moment - does anyone have any words of advice for me?

cheers

If the car wasn't like that when it went in, then its something the garage have done.

I'd guess they have upset the gearbox earth when fitting the cable.

Remove, clean, abrade, refit, tighten fully and cover with grease.

Cheers

It might only be a weak battery having gone flat while the car was out of use. But I dont believe in coincidence so make sure the garage sort battery earths etc.

If it turns out to be needed, service exchange reconditioned columns are about £180 with 2 years warranty.

My Power Steering went off the other week during the cold weather and it was because the battery was low on power (hadnt been driven much for a week) . Googled the problem and found that when the battery is low the Fiat turns off the electric power steering to conserve power (pretty clever actually) .
Im no expert but it might be worth charging up the battery just as an experiment , good luck anyway and im sure you'll get some more tips from the members here.

Edit--- WhiteSei beat me to it !

Steering relays dropping out are a symptom of a weak battery affecting the electronics. It's not a design feature to save the battery.
