hi all,
got a problem with my daily (60sx) and im stumped
at any speed over 30mph the steering wheel feels as if its slack
it seems when theres load its fine until you go for a gear change and take the load off then it feels slack and pulls left or right.
its slowly got worse over the last week and now i consider it unsafe to drive,i have checked the following today.......

arb
wishbone bushes
balljoints
wheel bearings
track rod ends
brakes are free and wheels spin by hand
it was tracked yesterday (trackrod ends were not siezed)

all of the above are fine with no play, movement,or fault.
im stumped anyone have any ideas?thanks.ad

the speedo works but dosent seem to move with ease it looks as tho it moves every 5mph.could the rack be worn?.ad

not worn internally but might be worth checking that the rack and column are not moving sideways before the wheels turn.
checked this whilst checking everything else there seems to be no play/movement.ad

I guess your speed sensor is playing up and putting you on full assistance.

What is the gearbox oil quantity and quality?

Cheers

D

gearbox oil was changed last week as the box was very noisey in 1st and 2nd,the oil that came out was ok so i put the noise down to syncromesh.what do you mean by full assistance?thanks.ad

The power steering is speed sensitive, you should get less assistance as the speed rises. It sounds like your car thinks its going slowly so is providing full assitance when it shouldn't be.

Simple test, pull the EPS fuse and drive.

Will be heavy at rest but shouldn't go all floaty at speed.

Cheers

D

i dont have power steering just collum,uj and rack, thanks.ad

nope, checked when you said to remove the eps fuse as i was a bit confused, just a collumn with no assistance, thanks.ad

I am having the same problem with my Punto Mia, thought the wierd steering was down to ice on the roads up until all the ice had gone then yesterday the steering decided to go sloppy on the motorway. I did have a clicking noise coming from the around the steering area prior to this (can tell i'm technical can't you) could it be the steering column has gone?
Sorry to hijack your thread Shawzy but as my problem is identical it seemed daft starting a new one.

no worries(y)ive checked everything possible the only thing left wich i cant visualy inspect is the internals of the steering rack, for the sake of £15 down a local scrappy i might just try a rack and see how that goes.ad

ill get down the scrappy tommorow and pick up a rack looks a doddle to remove anyway get it tracked and go from there,i hope its the rack as im stumped if its not.its to dangerous to drive ill have to take the gt to go and get the rack would normally be pleased to take it out but dont fancy the lanes now all that snow and ice has produced huge cracks/potholes,getting bored of buying bumpers now:yum:.ad

Just before you go buy a rack, is the current rack centered?

Cheers

D
do you mean the steering whell centered with the wheels or the rack centered on the subframe?thanks for the help.ad

Suspect this is a gearbox fault, diff collapsing maybe?

by the sound of the box the syncromesh is stuffed as 1st and 2nd are growling but im not bothered about the box as theres about 20 mk1 puntos at the local scrappy and i could probably haggle one for about £30 i was just going to wait until the box failed completely or comes close to it a faulty diff wouldnt cause such bad road holding would it?.ad
