i have a bit of belt noise, well quite a bit of belt noise actually. i had to remove and re-seal the water pump as it had a slight leak, the car is back together and i got some bad belt noise, im not sure if its the cam belt tentsioner or maybe alternator belt.

i did have the noise before, but only at about 1500rpm and no where near as bad, the cam belt has only done about 7k miles. i think maybe i set the tensioner too tight to be honest, whats the general rule for setting it? i set it to twist nearly half way around on the longest run.

i recorded the sound and uploaded to a file stream site.

hopefully someone can confirm and maybe offer a solution! :D

Remove the alternator belt and run the car to rule that out.

Cheers

i have sorted it now :)

it was timing belt, i took cover off and could tell, i only needed to slack it off a fraction, sounds sweet now (y) i went and did it after posting this thread because it started to get dark quick :(

off topic question, figured its better than making another thread.. i did the rocker cover gasket today as well and the carbon inside there was nuts, its really bad big chunks of black bits... i checked down the spark plug holes and its badly carboned up inside, looks like there's all sorts in there. i took a loook down the throttle body and its really mucky in there too!

im doing a full service next week, what stuff could i use to clean the engine out? i don't wanna put nice clean oil in a manky engine. it really needs a good clean!

Hi, if theres lumps of solid carbon in the engine..probably due to neglected oil changes and using cheap oil at some point in the cars life.

theres not a lot you can do about it, dont be tempted to use any kind of oil flush because that will clean some of the crud up.. but flush it into places you dont want it like the main and big end bearing shells doing damage.

only way to clean the engine up is to start pulling it apart and cleaning it... so unless you fancy doing that only thing you can do is leave it as it is.

Had an engine like that before, was run on cheapo oil which completely carbonised the inside of the engine.. had to completely strip the engine down, clean it out and rebuild it, because i was getting low oil presure problems as the carbon was all breaking up and clogging the oil pickup.

glad you posted that, i was gonna drop in some forte engine flush on the next service. its a real mess! common sense i suppose really, oil rails are really fine jets.

i have a question regards to TDC for timing the engine, when i did the belt i had turned the crank over till i could see a really big grove on the flywheel through the cutout on the bell housing. does it matter where the grove lines up on the hole or just need to be able to see it?

There should be a mark on the flywheel and a mark on the bellhousing to line it up on.

Cheers

there is numbers by the hole. there was zero but not sure if these were some kind of serial number. didnt see any mark on the housing.

sorry to re-open this thread but how eay is it to loosen the timing belt tensioner? Mine has been replaced and i have that noise appearing and tbh it is rather embarassing when driving a long

Thanks in advance

take it back
of course its also possible the tensioner gimballs are failing, did you get them to fit a new one?

Yeah it was a new one, belt & tensioner...unfortunatley i left it too long for them to have a look at it, was fobbed off with 'it will go after a week or two'

Looks like i'm gonna have to buy a new kit and get someone to fit it properly
