hello new here, needing some advice/help
A few weeks ago my car started making a high pitched noise like wind whistling through trees, i took it to the garage they test drove it and the gear cable snapped so they bunged a new one on and the noise went. But today the noise came back and i lost 5th gear. gear working now but not going in smoothly at all very worried is my gear box on the way out??? went to the garage today and they said they don't know whats wrong with it!!! please help...... my car is 55 reg punto, had so many problems with this car

Obvious answer is to change your garage, but in the meantime when was the car last serviced?

Has anybody checked the gearbox oil quality and quantity recently?

It sounds like the gearbox is packing up. Find a half decent garage those blokes are either gormless or don't want your business.

When the box is fitted have a new clutch fitted while its open. But before doing that get the brakes checked and anything else that wears out with age and usage. So you know what the total costs might turn out at. Unless done recently, include a FULL all fluids & brakes service in that list.

Puntos are reliable cars if properly serviced but old ones get bought as cheap hacks and then neglected. So they keep breaking down from worn out parts or poor servicing. On top of that normal wear and tear (like gearbox bearings) kicks in.

at last i have got my car sorted. went to another garage and they obviously knew what they were doing!. Couldn't understand it, i have driven fiat cars for 12 years and never had so much hassle. i always look after my car as i am lost without it! can't believe it took 3 garages to finally get it done!! gear cable needed adjusting that's why i lost 5th gear!!! feels like new now. thanks for help. rachael.
