anyone know the rules on number plates?

i was thinking of changing mine as tey have advert on for place were i got my car from wich i now hate lol

anyways can i change font ?
can i change the eu gb pic at the end ???

dont want to get something and then get pulled over and told to change by teh nice boys in blue

Basically, No and No I'm afraid. I've been through all this because the plates on my old punto were in italics and they were banned. There is now a standard font so you can't change anything there, and as for the EU flag thing well you can change it but only to one of the 4 national flags or the union flag - not any other custom logo. (If you're just doing that you can get a sticker)

If you want to get a new one done without the garage details etc you can but (don't quote me on this) I think they still have to have the BS number and manufacturer on so the police know they are legal, so you can't have totally clear i don't think.

It'll all be on the www.dvla.gov website somewhere I'm sure if you need more

k been reading up on teh plate thing and you are right you should have manufacturer and bs number on them BUT from what i read this law came in 2001 and applys to plates 2001 onwards my car is techincally 2000 x even though it was registered jan 2001. soo i may get away with not having the manufacturer and bs number by saying if ever asked that they cam on car lol. im, not after anytihng obvioulsy fake.

im gonna have standrd font dont mind that. and site mentioned above a1 can put lil fiat logo in bottom right corner.

question for fiattech did you by any chnace have blue border?? if so does it look green on teh back yellow plate ?? reason i ask is that when i was another site that done plates when i picked blue border it said it appears green on teh back. soo i dont want to blue and then it bloody green on back.

Have a look at the DVLA website, it'll give youy all teh do's and don'ts (there are loads more don'ts than do's though!!!) Basically if the police act to the letter of the law, they can hassle you for any changes outwith the regs.

I used fancyplates for some new (standard font with a border) plates and was very happy with the service.

i used fancy plates, cause they the only ones i could find that would do me a bike plate and a backlit rear plate, both legal i hope  - well it wasnt picked up on the mot

i found there service quite poor though, took 6 days to get my plates, when they reckon 48 hour turn around, i would use them again though

FAO thefishdude,

I had Fiat badge, black border with navy fiat border badge, the colour was ok on all fronts, and the border badge in navy was exactly the same as standard fiat badge.

Other point good or bad i dunno, was that no proof of id or vehicle ownership was needed- now when people buy plates from dealer i work for you need V5, driving license, utility bill etc...

Mad.

No you definately don't have to have the flag you still get the option of one or the other on new cars usually I think.

Could you tell me which is the fourth nation, and which is the fourth national flag, please?

From the DVLA's website: "The Government announced on 28 December 2001 the intention to permit the display of national flags and symbols on vehicle number plates. When the regulations are amended they will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon."

You may also notice that in Northern Ireland (which I presume you refer to as the fourth 'nation') numberplates are generally not issued with the "Euro" strip, and also instead of the "GB"* would carry the "NI" symbol.

*don't confuse "Great Britain" with the "United Kingdom"

Oi I resent that get your facts straight. Actually I never confuse the two, I got an A* GCSE Geography thank-you-very-much :) I know very well the difference between UK and GB, clealy NI plates would not show GB.

I didn't bother to read the dvla site, why would I. I don't care what you want to call it but to me NI is as much of a 'nation' as Wales or Scotland. I knew the system was slightly different in NI but assumed the NI flag would be one of those allowed on UK cars. I didn't spend any time on it because it's not important.

Is this really an issue?

That is the sort of thing i was after cheers for the info. i wanted the border bagde and i considered the fiat badge on the side instead of the eu thing although i know techincally that is illegal so may have nothing at all,

have you had any problem swith your plates regards to police ?

You may have got that grade in Geography but modern politics is another subject.

NI is not a nation, and if you dispute that, refer to the Downing Street Declaration.

Cars from NI don't carry overtly identifying symbols such as the "NI flag" that you refer to (I presume you mean the slightly adopted George Cross) as it would be seen as a statement by whoever displayed it on their cars. Similarly, NI cars abroad can be seen with both GB and IRL national identifying stickers, both of which are permitted under EU law.

My facts are perfectly straight, it's you that needs to be just that little bit more aware of them.
