Help needed,:bang: My daughters Punto active 52 reg, is having a problem which have been told could be caused by POOR ENGINE EARTH STRAP CONNECTION.
However with the weather been so ****ty, and i cannot find it in the HAYNES manual, could anyone tell me where it is,(a picture would be even better). The problem is engine SOMETIMES cuts out when BRAKE pedal is pressed, and is getting more+more frequent.
Am sure someone on here will have some suggestions?:worship:

By Earth Straps - they probably mean eathing points

Anyway
I know there are 3 In the engine bay
May be more over the car but not that i know off

Anyway
When you look at the engine bay - where the battery tray is - look just down to the side of it
You'll see some wire attached to the car itself via a Nut (10mm?) That is one Earthing point
No2 is just to the side of it - like a Block with wire coming out of it

No3 is on the gearbox - getting the right angle to see it is task1, and getting it off no2, but there is a earth strap just ontop of the gearbox

Ziggy

Ive been around cars for a very long time & have had some good, bad & varying experiences. On some older cars I've owned I used to multi earth the vehicle, this, 9 times out of 10 made a noticeable difference to the running of the car. Smoother & a tiny bit more responsive. It also made a difference on starting (far easier)

I used to have a wee punto 75sx & I can honestly say after multi earthing, it ran like a clock. Now I'm certainly not going to claim any power gains, but this wee tip did make full use of the electrical system.

Nah they not earthing points, the engine itself is earthed to the chasis somewhere. thats what looking for, Thanks anyway(y)

Engine is attached to the gearbox - and the gearbox is earthed (y)

So the earth im looking for is the one UNDER BATTERY TRAY on top of gearbox, connected directly to battery which means one of the OTHER earths must be connected to bodywork? The one on gearbox appears to be ok.

'Appears' often ain't good enough.

Remove both ends, clean, abrade, refit, tighten fully and lubricate.

However, have you stuck your head under the dash and made sure that the brake levers aren't pulling at a connection under there?

To confirm, you could also unplug the brake light switch and see if it still cuts out.

Cheers

TRUE, only problem with unplugging brake light switch is problem is intermittent, ie, wont do it for a week, then may do it half a dozen times in one day. However will have a look underneath dash just to make sure, CHEERS.:slayer:

JUST TO CONFIRM, THIS PROBLEM STARTED WITH CAR CUTTING OUT WHEN CAR WAS PUT INTO REVERSE GEAR, AND HAS NOW MOVED ONTO BRAKE PEDAL!!!!!!!!!!(y)

caps lock - find it please, it implies your shouting
Were not deaf :)

It does sound like a grounding issue, poor grounding issues cause allsorts of problems

I'd clean them all up - see what happens
If it does nothing, then you've done some maintance and Eliminated a possible fault
