Hello and well found! I have just bought a used punto and a thing I've noticed is the clutch is heavy, then it goes about half way in and then it is ok to the end. A couple of guys told me I need to change the whole clutch thing which is about 200 euros but another one just oiled the pedal and said it isn't important. But the clutch remains heavy. The 1st gear enters with some difficulty sometimes too. Do you think it is time to change the clutch? Or is it ok to just let it be for a while?
Thank you.

Hey Chris,

Clutches can be relative to the car. For example, my boss had a 1997 Peugeot 406 and I thought that the clutch on that car was either ****ed or on the way out. He brought it to Peugeot and they said it was just a heavy clutch.

I would recommend that you find someone who has the same or similar model and drive theirs. That way you can pin down if the issue is with the car or the clutch.

I have a Mk2 Sporting and selecting first can be a bit sticky when the car is cold. Do you have the same issue when the oil is hot?

Agreed!

There a known clutch problem with Mk2 and Mk2b Puntos, though.

@chriss - Depending how old the car is, get it in to Fiat and see if they'll change it for you under warranty. Slim chance I guess, but if you don't ask, you don't get!

Thanks for the replies and sorry for my late responce. Well I haven't noticed any change when the car is cold when it comes to the first gear. It's almost always hard. The punto is an 98 model so no guarantee. I got it to a technician (not FIAT technician but he was cheaper) and we changed the clutch because it really was very hard to push. So this problem is solved. But the technician discovered that the "sasman" (I don't know it in english - the thing where the gears change in the front of the car not inside?) was broken and that it was glued. Anyway the car doesn't seem to have any problem at all except with the first and reverse gear which sometimes are hard. Especially when it comes to the reverse gear sometimes it doesn't function... I hope I don't need a new "sasman" because I've heard they are quite expensive. But the reverse gear is really giving me trouble. When I push it down it makes a somewhat loud noise and one time in three it won't go in at all. Can it be something else apart the "Sasman"? Some kind of cable maybe? Thanks!

i have the reverse gear problem on my mk2 8v aswell, told the monkeys at my local fiat garage about the problem when my car went in for a service and they said its normal :bang:

And I'm sure it isn't normal! I checked with a friend's punto (a 96 model) and the reverse gear works like a charm. I'm going to a FIAT garage and ask them about it but I'll be careful not to let them make all sorts of alterations. I think it might be simple to fix (could just be the cable or a small cogwheel) but most of them are bored to simply look at it and fix it so they sometimes just tell you to change a whole bunch of stuff (which is much more expensive than just "tuning" it)

Tell me how this goes, mines a Mk1 1998 60s and its got the same problem as yours, except my problem with 1st gear is far worse than the reverse, which is just a bit tough.
