Big End probs??

Me again--Still tapping noise from engine-- recently had MOT they said nothing. Took me Punto 60S to get a new exhaust section at an ATS, the mechanic looked shocked at the noise- said it could be tappets or big(high end prob). He said it would be mega expensive to sort or to lower tapping noise try a Halfords product to reduce blue smoke(which the car doesn't have) may help or may not?
Bad person as this as been going on for years, doesn't really bother me but people always ask if i have oil in??? Course i have! As this is constant and for yonks, should i be overly concerned ie get rid or it'l cost ya 250+ ? Looking to get rid in a few months anyway should i ride my luck or sell it on NOW!

Tanks a million.

Re: Big End probs??

depends what ya wnat to sell it for... nobodys going to touch it if the big ends are knocking about like a [insert amusing metaphore here]. I'm sure a second hand engine won't cost too much for a punto, may be cheeper than fixing the existing engine, and make it a little more sellable.

Re: Big End probs??

big end noise is very distinctive............ drain your oil and look for metallic particles in it........... bottom pulley broke up on my punto which made a knocking noise from bottom end, so it may not be terminal........ i'd get your car checked out pronto

Re: Big End probs??

Big ends = rumbling noise = bad news.

A rattling from the top end sounds like tappets. Try some engine flush and an oil change. Is your car fuel injected or carburetted? Worn injectors can make a ticking noise but isn't "too" serious.

Re: Big End probs??

I'd agree, think tappets need adjusting that's all. Someone recommended 'stop smoke' additive and decent oil. Think as it's been awhile the big end would have gone by now--RIP.
