ive recntly engine changed my sporting into a hgt and had a few problems as id expected.

The power steering didnt work so i worked out id probably have to swap the power steering ECU from the hgt and it worked, well for a few days.

Now my power steering has stopped working again, the steering has gone stiff and the steering light is on.

Ive tried taking out and putting back in the plugs which go into the power steering ECU numerous times but no joy!!

Any ideas to whars the problem???

Check the battery, alternator charge rate, battery / engine earth points before you start looking at more expensive options.

I know it sounds stupid cause u probably checked this first but did you check the power steering fluid? Just a thought :D

Ive had a similar problem and found after a long drive it went back to normal so i took as my battery needed a good charge.

So first to check that all that sort of system is opperating correctly and your battery has plenty of juice.

BIG HUGE ALMIGHT

FAIL!!!

Punto's Use an electronic System for powersteering, No silly PowerSteering Fluid

Its Not uncommon for a dying/weak battery to cause a light failure

Ziggs, do please tone it down. You are 100% correct but not a bit heavy handed.

The electric power steering is light and efficient but not a 100% success. Its demanding on batteries and there seem to be quite a few failing with relay faults. The old hydraulics (not used on Mk2s) were at least reliable after the manufacturer's warranty ran out.

If the steering has gone south it can probably be repaired. Service exchange units are about £180 comparing quite well to new parts from Fiat at around £600 (give or take).

I've an MK1 Punto with no power steering and an 02 Peugeot 307 with power steering that takes power steering fluid. If I have a Punto without power steering how am I supposed 2 know that it doesnt take fluid. Just thought i'd offer an opinion I thought thats wat we were all here for. (n)

Possibly an error caused by the lack of a Vehicle Speed sensor signal (due to your no ABS, no speedo problem- unless you've got that fixed now?). Need to read the error code to know for sure.

thanks for your ideas guys! yeh my battery is rubbish ive killed it off too many times i probly need a new 1.

it might be somethin to do with some sort of computer, i was dreading it bein the fact id have to swap the power steering motor from the hgt or something because the ECU doesnt like the sporting motor.

nah still no speedo im trying to get a speed sensor from a non-abs barchetta nd see if tht works its my only chance.

Won't be an issue- the PAS motor's and ECU's are the same. Only real differences are the lower shafts and if it's an auto.

I went the whole hog with my HGT. The "correct" battery was about £75, with the better spec Bosch Silver at £105. I thought £30 was good insurance so bought the Bosch.

Also this May Sound Super Stupid

But, Its been Raining alot recently (esp around here) and Condensation is higher atm

I found one day/to a week my PS just kept conking out, i ended up just driving the car without it working

I went and had a look at the coloum, and found moisture all over the motor and some connectors

So with the hairdrier out and engine running (switched city on too - this helps warm things up a Wee bit) I started to dry my motor out and the surrounding area, a lil contact cleaner on the ecu and plugs related, after a while and few turns of the steering wheel to move the motor to allow the internals to dry out my Light Stopped coming on and problem seem'd to be solved

For Good Measures, i left some silica packets around the column and fuse box area to prevent it happening again
