remove the cam pulley?????

why??

the marks are beside the pulley and on the pulley?

can you explain?

ah i know what u mean now, the locating lug for the pulley. right gotcha, good point, thats possible. by any chance do you know the position the cams need to be in to set the timing coz ill open the rocker cover up and try it that way?

Can someone please confirm

punto 1.2 8v 1999

timing marks for camshaft? having issues with it and hearing alot about timing being out by 180 degrees and not really understanding how?

Getting smoke from the intake now and thats with the timing marks all set up.......................WHAT THE F*UCK?????

I know, but the frustrating thing is that the marks are bang on each other.

Im starting to doubt the timing mark on the head. The last go i looked at the cams themselfs and set them to closed for the compression stroke.

they sort of jump into place when u turn it. they were lower than the head mark. but still didnt work nor did the ones on the head just below 9 ish o clock.

i need help big time.

Re: Can someone please confirm

well the cam turns twice 2 the crank so prob means 1 rotation of the cam is 180 to the crank..? iv suffering the same prob...iv changed head n gasket ....now i got no skark 2 the plugs....doin me head in ....lol

Timing mk 1.2 8v. GOT PICTURES!!!!

These are the pictures just to show everyone the markings im using on teh camshaft to time my engine. Ive used the flywheel to find TDC and used the mark shown. Still not getting any luck, it sruggles when cranking and i had a puff of smoke back fire through the inlet. Nice.

Im really struggling what to do now.

Re: Timing mk 1.2 8v. GOT PICTURES!!!!

First pic shows the cam in the right place, so that's ok. With the flywheel notch lined-up with the large pointer and the bottom (alternator) pulley fitted correctly it should run fine. If the bottom pulley is wrong, the timing and injection will be 120 deg out (back-firing through the inlet is a sure sign it's on wrong).

Failing that, ensure the HT leads are on the correct plugs and coils.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that you'd had the crank pulley off (that drives the cambelt)? Often the keyway will shear off when undoing or if over-tightened, leading to it not locating on the end of the crank correctly which would affect both valve and ignition/injection timing.

I cant thank you enough for your reply.

ive been talking about the crank sprocket markings being WRONG according to haynes etc. i just took it all back off etc and looked again.

the locating pin for the crank sprocket was broken. i took it off and put it to the correct position, couldnt get it to lock on as it had sheared off but its close enough. i put the flywheel on the big notch and loocked back at the crank. it was pointing to the original timing mark which i was wrong, I CANT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!!

after all that i realised that the marks DO MATCH! BALLS!!!!

anyway so now im not sure what to do. it wont make a difference coz ive been using the flywheel marks to time it. also i looked at the pin for the crankpulley (alternator) and that pin sheard off too. but ive bolt it onto the crank in the correct position anyway so thats all good. Ive checked the sparks and there all good.

but wait as im writing this ive just realised that if the position of the crank sprocket has changed now the crank pulley position will change meaning an ignition timing change.........oh god i think this is it???

Yep- I've known many crank drive sprockets to shear on removal like they're made out of cheese. Only cure is a new sprocket (not ridiculously expensive if I remember)- the crank nose and keyway will be fine as they're much tougher. Trying to obtain a 2nd hand one will almost certainly lead to the same breakage.

Glad we're getting there! (y)

seeing as there is a slight nip left on the back of the crank sprocket, you think i could get it in place and still bolt it back on OR is the locating bit essential??
