finally changed both belts all good but im still getting some screeching from the belt area (occassionally) hmmmm  my uncle said to just spray some WD40 on the pulley, also i still have this stupid existing problem when i start my car its most of the time sluggish but always starts  to be honest the fan belt (auxillary belt) whatever was in a very bad state so i thought it was that, ive changed:

- Spark plugs
- Timing belt and tensioner
- Fan belt
- Oil service

even though my battery gets a normal voltage reading it could be it needs replacing and the terminals need a good clean or the HT leads need replacing i just don't know.... anyone :worship:

Hi mate,

DONT spray WD40 onto the belt!

It could be the alternator bearings are on their way out, if it DEFINATELY does not do it when the aux belt is disconnected.

Also, is the belt tensioned correctly? If its loose it can slip and screech.

As for the battery, you need to do a load test on it. It may be showing the correct voltage, but if its on its way out, it wont have the right amount of OOOMPH to turn the car over fast enough.

As said. Check the belts are nice and tight. If not, remove the alternator belt andst lik it still squeals then. If it does then most likely timng belt related still. If not then alternator bearing. Which is a new alternator I'm afraid

BTW send me a pm if it is your alternator. I'm in Wigan every weekday morning and I have 3 alternators going spare :p

well the belts are both new and tensioned nice... the alternator looks brand new its even got white stickers on!! thats a good point the car doesnt turn over quick enough its always sloppy.... well most of the time anyway, could it not be ht leads?

Im thinking new battery and alternator if that dont sort it then....... im bummed i dont think its timing belt related because i did a test were..... when i was putting petrol in i left the CD player on whilst i filled up THEN i got in my car went to start it and...... COMPLETELY NOTHING it took me 3 attempts with a few revs it started so....

Sounds like your battery is knackered if it went flat whislt you filled up with the cd player on.

HT leads wouldnt cause it to turn over slowely.

Alan

Taking a while to start can be the air intake blocked/dirty or the timing out slightly aswell

Yeah very true. Im struggeling to understand exactly what the problem is though.

Is it just slow to turn over? Or it turns over fine but is slow to start? And when you say you came back from filling it up and "nothing" does that mean it didnt turn over at ALL, or that it was turning over but not firing?

Alan.

Well i was thinking the battery is nakered too, its just always sloppy when i start the car other times it starts first time, just annoys me, im just going to buy a new battery. and get the alternator tested.

It could also be the starter motor knackered. They also make odd noises at start up which could be what you are hearing.

There aint no funny noises on start up, can you get your timing tested at the garage? or could you do it yourself or something?

Hi mate,

You can check the timing yourself... OR almost any garage wil do it for you.

Once its started, is there any loss in performance? Decreased MPG? Flashing EML at high RPM?

Alan

Well this is the reason i dont think its anything to do with the timing because i do not get any of them alan, i think its a dodgy battery, alternator or dirty terminals.

what do you mean with the alternator belt off ? take the belt off and run the car? nope i don't know what you mean just tell me how to do it i will give it a go...

Yes, remove the belt completely so it's not on the alternator and start the engine. See if it makes the noise then.

Car will run fine without the belt on. Just don't remove the timing belt :p
