Ok.
Thought I'd sorted this (several times) but it keeps coming back. Difference is my girlfriend is driving the car now, not me, and she's not as confident as me with the car.
Basically the fault manifests as a lack of power below 2000 rpm. There's basically nothing there until the engine reaches 2000rpm, feels like a misfire (which is also there at idle every now and then) Above 2000 she's fine, and there's quite a kick in the rear when you pass 2000 rpm, almost like a hugely laggy turbo.
Anyway, what have I done?
Over the past year I have replaced the coil packs, twice (second time FOC) new plugs, new lambda.
Now an interesting twist, she only seems to misbehave when it's wet, which suggests some kind of damp earth fault, but all connectors I can find are heavily WD40'd and show no sign of corrosion.
Does anyone recognise this set of symptoms? I am thinking possibly ECU, but how do I tell? I've plugged her in to the Fiat software, and I get an error code that supposedly means cylinder 12 misfire. Now they kept cylinders 5 to 12 a big secret!
Another interesting symptom is that the engine management light (red with an ! in the middle of 2 circles) comes on when you brake to a low speed, or for an extended period, or go down a hill using engine braking. As I understand it the ECU should shut off fuelling when engine braking is being used, so is this an ECU fault reporting an engine fault (misfire maybe) in error as the fuelling is turned off and so resistance in the cylinder is different?
Is there anyone around Newbury way who can test ECU's and let me know if it's the fault for a sensible price, and maybe repair it if it is?
