Hi again,

When driving the rear seems to 'squeak' quite a lot and its really annoying.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?

(Car is a '04 reg Punto 1.2 8v Mk2b)

Cheers

Hello mate.

Car Mechanics Magazine recently covered the Punto in a buying guide and one thing that gets a mention is exactly what you described, a really annoying squeak from the rear of the car. Apparently its the hand brake cable and curing the squeak is a case of dabbing some grease on its mountings. Not tried it myself but mine does it too, just kinda got used to it I think lol.

i foud that noise to be the cable carrier also however i removed the old crappy clips put some tape around the area in contact with the bracket and put some spray greese on it and cable tied it to the bracket using a fairly wide strong cable tie, had been fine for 3 months

jobs a good'en

theres a handbrake cable carrier on each side of the rear beam, the carriers need to be tightend up. Jus get pliers and squeeze it tight to stop the squeeking.

its so annoying when its make noise, but a simple fix!

(y)Thanks,
At first i thought it could be either the springs or the shock absorbers in the suspension that were complaining because it doesnt make a noise when im on a flat ish road.

Sounds like you've got a hungry mouse. Lift the single rear seat and pour about 100 grammes of wild bird seed in, that should cure it! ;)

would work effectivley however that could cause the cable to chafe and wear through causing unessicary problems

There's a small garage next door I used to work for part time, I'll borrow some grease and try it.

A silicon spray lubricant on the bushes might help. Steer clear of WD40 or other mineral oil based lubricants as they can eat away the rubber.

that sounds good to me, if you can get some spray greese just coat the mount in it should work for a while :)

I'll do it either tomorrow or Saturday, I'm working from 8.30 to 5.00 tomorrow.

Absolutely. Get some suitable rubber hose to fit over the cable, cut off an inch and split it to fit over the cable and superglue the slit. Strap the rubber to the swing arm with a zip-tie, but dont pull it tight. This will stop the squeak and avoid compressing the cable outer.

Ive took the back wheels off to get to the clips and the metal moves so easily i dont think it will hold it tbh, one of the h/b cables wasnt in the clip.

I've sprayed them and the clips with some spray grease and hopefully its sorted! I haven't been out in it yet but i will let you know how i get on.

Cheers(y)

Check your shocks, I've just taken mine off and found one had failed but while they are off no squeaks must be something to do with the rubbers in their mounts?

Sent from my iPad Air using FIAT Forum

05 punto rear shocks are hollow in the bushings so all wear prematurely
i would rather fit second hand than fit a chinese joke
