My son has just bought a cheap 2000(W) punto 1.2 8v.

We're replacing the cylinder head gasket on it and getting the head reskimmed (hence the 'cheap').

I think I've found the engine number, on a smooth bit of casing next to the water pump. The only problem is that it bears no resemblance to the engine number on the V5 or EPER.

It seems to read B137001009B (or B1B7001009B) - is that right?

Shouldn't there also be a copy of the VIN number on that plate?

Oh, and guess which cylinder failed the compression test :D ...

why do you need the code?

Ive just replaced my headgasket yesterday, No. 4 cylinder had a fair bit of oil sitting on top of the piston when i removed the head, so suspect the valve stem seals are shot of those valves.

Cleaned them all up, then removed 10years of carbon build up from the valves, all back together & runs alot better. Feels like theres alot more power now.

Anyone know how to replace the valve seals??

Hi Colin

Needed the code to make sure that when I was ordering parts that I was ordering them for the correct engine. Without knowing the code I couldn't be sure that it wasn't a ringer in there.

However, ignore all my first post wrt engine number - now that I've removed the water pump I see that the number I found was actually on the pump. Luckily, resting my hand on the block to remove the pump removed some of the gunk. I found the engine number on the flat bit of metal (horizontal) underneath the 'clean' No.1 Piston in the photo above.

Luckily the engine number matches the V5 and EPER.

Cheers

The valve stem seals can be swines to get off as they have a steel insert. Mechanics use a special extractor. The rest of us use some long nose pointy pliers wiggle them back and forth left right up down and and struggle until the come off.

Be very careful to not lose any seals from the gasket set they dont provide any extra. Oil the seal and carefully drift on with a suitable small tube or 1/4 inch socket so you dont damage the seal lip.

The valves have to come out too.

Full story is here.

Edit be VERY careful to get the head gasket the right way around. DO it wrong and the head wont get any oil.
