Pull the spark plugs out (or just one) attached to the HT lead still and crank the engine, see if it produces a bright blue spark.

Marigolds may come in useful and keep well away from the spark, and keep it away from the engine

Ahh I forgot about that aswell. I know the mk1 has it but does the mk2 have one? I don't ever remember seeing it.

I know you have the mk1 though

Yep the MK2 has one. Its under the glovebox iirc. Or sometimes under the bonnet mounted on the bulkhead.

the switch next to the passenger seat seems clicked in but then again I've never seen it popped up to know if it's down. I've tried pressing it and noting happens.

Ok, it was worth mentioning as when it trips it interups the power supply to the LP pump.

The next thing I would suggest, is to get the mutimeter out and start checking the supply from the ecu to the fuse box/relay, then from the relay to the pump.

If the codelight on the dash comes on when you first turn the key and then quikly goes out, it suggests the code system is working correctly and turning the immobiliser off.

Hope that helps,
Alan

YAY! Thats what I wanted to hear, I hate immobilisers in any car, lets face it if someone is gonna nick it then it's gone. That's why we have insurance! I'm off to get some relays from the scrappie this morning before work. so maybe these will help. Then I guess I'll be needing to check for sparks and then checking signals with my multimeter (well my dads at least). Just out of interest, I know why the cutoff trips but how does it trip? what sensory input does it use?

A bump or a knock I think sets it off. It's safety for in a crash. Don't know if it's triggered electronically. But if someone catches it it can trigger it.

Immobilisers prevent people from stealing. Its just the thick car theives who don't know what cars have immobilisers and when they get frustrating trying to start it they simply smash it more or set it on fire!
It's always better to know someones failed to steal it than has done, joy rided in it and then get it back? (That is in the situations you DO get it back - when the police actually pay attention and don't make excuses for not turning up!)

My point exactly, but if the stupid immobiliser does stop them then rather than getting your joyriden but fairly ok motor back, if the 5-0 do pull the donuts out their a***, you're met kindly in the morning with a newly blackened paint job and a visit from a man in a shiny yellow helmet! Then you won't be rolling it anywhere!

so....I went to the local scrappie this morning, only to find the one and only punto sporting mk1 they have has been torn to shreds and gutted basically. Damn magpies! I did however look under the bonnet of a Brava and voila! an exact (but newer) replica of my relays. Only trouble is, the part numbers are different, everything else on the relays are the same but I just wondered that if I put these into my Punto, am I gonna fry anything?

Also, someone very kindly emailed me a copy of the Haynes manual for this car but it doesnt include the wiring diagrams. a)does anyone have these diagrams b)would it be of any use to anyone to put it into the downloads section?

Check the little circuit diagram moulded into the top of the relay. If they are the same they will be ok.

A basic relay test is easy to do. Put one switching contact on the battery live and use a test lead to link the earth to the other relay contact. If it clicks its ok.

So another update, the relays work. no big surprise there. Nothing seems to be working. I looked behind the centre console and there is a yellow lead with an unplugged plug split off it. Does anyone know if this should be connected to something or if not, what it is?

LOL! I've given up. fed up of wild goose chases. I'm paying someone who actually knows what he's doing to come and do a diagnostics!
