hi,
can anyone shed some light on how to change my fiat punto 1.2 8v rear springs and shocks, information would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Raise the rear of the car using a trolley jack and a block of wood under the rear beam. Put axle stands under the sills and lower the car onto them. Reposition the trolley jack under the trailing arm and raise slightly. This will take the pressure off the damper bottom bolt, which you can then remove. When you lower the trolley jack back down again, the spring will decompress and can be simply removed. Repeat on the other side, and use the reverse procedure to re-install. Saving final tightening until the weight of the car is on the ground.

is there another place to put the axle stands for this? My sills are rather rusty... don't reckon that method would be very safe

It's a bit tricky without the sills because the rear axle is a single piece. Securing it anywhere on the axle may cause the car to be pushed off when manipulating the springs. I would get some wood and a chisel, carving a block to fit the sill. That way, you can spread the weight across the sill.

Ok, i have some wood lying about so that could be done... I'll have a look at them tomorrow aswell, they may not be as bad as i remember

I tried this and the spring do not simply get removed. In fact without putting the spring compressors they will not come off. The pretension on standard springs seem too high to allow just removal. In fact both front and rear springs on my Mk1 punto are pretty impossible to remove without spring compressor.

If the sills are rusty is going to fail the MOT. They are structural parts and within a minimum distance (200mm I believe) of the seat belt anchor points.

That distance rule will also take out the tyre changing jacking points if they are also rusty.

Get the welding done & then get the suspension sorted.

Deffo. Use a good quality anti rust solution and then treat with a waxoyl/dinitrol type product that soaks into the metal surface and disperses moisture. There are companies that will do all this for you and TBH its very good insurance. My car body looks great but I've recently had to spent £300 on two lots of welding - and its only a Y reg. :(

Hi,
looks like this was the only thread detailing the job..,

anybody like to offer thoughts/experience of removing the rear dampers from a 51 plate punto..

just how well rusted in are the mounting bolts likely to be..??

I'm going to soak everything for days before the swap-around, ;)

Soak everything in plusgas, might be worth spraying some rust remover into the back of the subframe which the bolts pass through.
Much easier with a impact driver to hammer the bolts out, using a long breaker bar will wind them out but you risk sheering them.
