okay just new here.

go a mk2 2000 1.2 8v punto, oil light is flashing on and off.

went to change the oil could only get a small drop in as the oil has went all mushy.

Been told my head gasket is gonna go?

few folks said look for white oil, there was a tiny bit of white oil in the cap but thats it.

is it possible to change the oil yourself?

any reccomendations?

thanks

Your best bet would be to get a Haynes for about fifteen quid. This'll explain what's involved in many different tasks. An oil change is easy.

To check if a gasket has gone and its letting water in then..

take off the oel filler cap and check for any white deposits (like aluminium corrosion) also check that the water level in the radiator header and engine coolant are at there proper levels and haven't dropped or filled with murky oilly water. This is a sign that a gasket has gone somewhere and is leaking water into the oel system.

The haynes manual will explain most things well and cost you £12-15 (£20 for a colour one).
You say you can only get a little oel out of the drain plug? If so then it is probably contaminated with water, and has gone lumpy (white stuff mixes with oel) and has blocked hole, if so poke it with a stick and flush with some potent stuff, with engine turning over to flush the crap out.

or warm the engine up to operation temp and turn her off and wait about 30mins to 1 hour and try n drain the oil then as it will be alot thinner than cold oil but cool enogh that if you spash yourself with it it wont burn you.

You filled it up with more oil to change it??
There's a limit to how much you can put in, and a limit to how much you can't have in the oil canester.

Too Litte - Damages Engine
Too Much - The oil will mix up too much (throph) and Damage the Engine. Which sounds like the 'mushy' your talking about.
