I need to change the steering wheel clockspring on my Punto. I've had the airbag off before but ran out of time and forgot to check the size of the socket in the wheel centre bolt.

I'll need to get the right bit before starting the job. Can anyone tell me what I will need to remove that centre nut/bolt - Is it a large torx or hex and what size.

The car is an HGT Abarth.

Hi mate, I know on my mark 1 after the horn is popped out its a 19mm socket that holds it on, used with an extension bar.

Hope that might help.

Dave

Ps. Ive just been looking for other info on the net, and why do people worry so much about the airbag going off lol it wont, the airbag in the steering wheel and passenger side are controlled by the ecu and set off by sensor's behind the front bumper area that detect the shock of the crash. If there disconnected they wont just go bang on the slightest bump, otherwise what happens when you slam the door or bang the horn lol watched it on "how its made" more useless info lol

The steering wheel nut, which has a funny looking head, is usually a 24mm hex head (all the Fiats ive dismantled have had 24mm nuts holding the wheel). Whenever I have to take the wheel off a Fiat, ill engage the lock and use a flex handle with extention and impact socket to loosen the nut then centre the wheel and remove it, nothing worse than a misaligned wheel. Some Fiats engage the lock on the wheel others on the column so its best to have the key in the ignition when removing the wheel. Its recomended to use a new nut when refitting

Edit: Dont be alarmed if the clockspring is held in with only 3 screws and not 4, the clocksprings are often used in other cars with different screw holes

Hi Folks thanks for this.

Its funny I'm sure there was plain circular "nut" with a hole down the centre (obviously). I assumed it was some sort of socket but with lack of time, and rushing to box it up, I forgot to take a proper look.
