Good morning everyone i hope you can help me we have just bought a "y" 1.2 punto 60k for the first week alls been fine we know the history of the car from new ands its had no significant issues just the usual niggles cars have, however yesterday the car wouldnt start after being left out alnight as usual for the car so a quick jump start and off it went got it to work and the battery was "drop tested" i think they call it....battery dead so organised new one to be at home for when i got back at10pm. Car was jump started so i could get home. then i changed the battery...went to turn the car over to see if it started and nothing not a light coming on not a relay clicking nothing:bang:....had a quick look under the bonnet at the fuses couldnt see any of the large fuses blown i also had a quick look at the interrior fuse box next to the steerring wheel didnt see much....any ideas where to look and what to check.....

Also it appears theres a leak into the passenger side foot well is this a common fault and easily fixed??

Thanks in advance of any replies...:worship:

If it works with a jump lead from battery NEGATIVE to engine block, you'll need to clean the connections on the main earth strap from battery to chassis to engine. It could also be the main positive wire to the starter that's come loose.

The leak could be as bad as the heater matrix or as simple as the drains in the pockets below the wiper linkage are blocked and its filling with water.

Check the coolant level if its dropping it probably the heater. NEVER use the engine with low coolant IT WILL BLOW THE HEAD GASKET. Modern engines have very little spare coolant capacity.

Thanks WhiteSie for the advice do i literally just put one of my jump leads onto the teminal and hold it to the block? And if that does work just where are the earth straps? Im sure i can find the possitive lead to the starter and clean those easily enough.

As for the leak fairly happy its not the matrix as the water problem is only when it rains so will check the drains as you sugest.

All sorted now...earth strap was the culprit hadnt noticed it had come adrift from the mounting; so cleaned and re-attatched and its up and running.....thanks for the promt reply.

No worries send me a thanks flag. :)

The heater intake area under the wipers has to be seriously full to leak into the car so don't rule out the heater leaking. Always check the coolant (and oil) levels. These engines wont tolerate low levels especially coolant. Its why the head gaskets go so often - people neglect them.

Check under the boot carpets at the sides of the rear wheel arches or from the outside close to the shock absorber mounts. Give it a good prod with a screwdriver its its not rusted you wont go through.
