My son has a Fiat Punto 1.2 (2000) MKII (I think) and is currently expeiencing some difficulties. He's taken it to a local garage and they have said that he needs to replace the ECU and it'll cost araound £400 - which I think is a bit steep.

His problem is that he'll be driving along quite happily and suddenly loses power. At this point the Injection System Failure light comes on. A couple of minutes later the light goes off and the power comes back.

I've just driven it back from the garage and it started, but there was a rattling coming from the engine bay (like thin pipes banging). Moving off, there was little power. Once driving I needed to keep my foot flat on the floor (engine didn't race) and took a few minutes to go through the gears and get to 40 mph.

After a another couple of minutes the there was a judder (the Injection System Failure light went off and came back on) then a few seconds later the light goes off and power is restored.

Excuse my ignorance but surely this is a fuel problem.

We also asked them to investigate a knocking from underneath the rear of the car and was told that it was the exhaust knocking due to the engine misfiring (it's been a while since I've had a misfire, but they were a bang/pop as opposed to a knock). Don't know if this is connected.

Anyway I'd really appreciate any insights and solutions to this that hopefully won't cost £400:bang:
Thanks
Tony

Check the timing on it, may be the ecu but I'm not so sure about that one. Could just be a faulty sensor?

Get the code read, when the EML is on, get a code reader on it and check what it throws out. Won't work unless the light is on though

What sort of code reader does it need - OBDII/OBDIII? Oh and where do you plug it in

Hi, I remember my freind having this problem with his punto, More or less exactly the same happned to him. The garage told him it was his ECU, They told him it wasn't giving enough fuel to the internal combustion and the replaced it for 250 pounds, That was for a 1999 punto selcta 60. I'm not sure if theres more labour invivled in the 2000 model but can't be much difference 400 seems a bit steep. Also could be a faulty sensor like mentioned above.

Thanks corky, have ordered a manual and set of colil packs off amazon/ebay. Do you know which sensor I need - there seem to be a multitude of them on e-bay at a range of prices?
