Wonder if anybody can help

I had my Punto Mk 2 for little over a week

Well yesterday this little power steering light came on, so after a few choice four letter words, I switched it off disconnected the battery for 20 mins reconnected and bingo the power steering working again.

when i orginally bought the car the battery was flat and needed a jump start to kick her up.

she kicked up first time ever since then.

But im wondering could a dodgy battery be the main problem for the power steering not working or could it be something else causing the problem, before i go splashing out on a new battery.

Yes battery is a possibility, and indeed a cheap "splash-out" compared to a new PS assembly (motor, control unit & column). So get the battery properly checked out, look at all electrical connections associated with battery & power steering as well as the earth/ground points. Clean any suspect ones up thoroughly, re-connect and seal with vaseline or Copper based grease.
