We have recently aquired the above vehicle. I have fitted a new MAF due to the fact that the car had no go below 2000 rpm, and it was difficult to maintain a constant speed (car either coasting or accelerating). The new MAF has made a tremendous difference in that it will pull from just over idle speed, and is much smoother. However, when the engine has not reached full operating temperature, it can have awful flat spots (which make pulling out of junctions or joining motorways a bit of a gamble).

Is it likely to be the EGR valve possibly sticking that's causing this, and if so are they easy to remove and clean, or better still, blank off without detriment?

Thanks in anticipation.

Further to the post I made yesterday, today the car gradually returned to having the flat spot all the time again (as it did before the new MAF smoothed them out). I disconnected the MAF again and it did make a difference. I will have to see what it's like when started from cold, but last time it was as previously posted.

The new MAF was not a genuine Bosch (but I've had new Bosch ones in the past that were faulty from new!), but I would have expected more than a couple of days out of it, if indeed the MAF is the problem?

I have found new MAFs unpredictable too; EGR valve can be blanked off on the JTD with improved performed and economy (see post on this) dunno about 1.3; just disconnecting the wiring won't work as ECU expects EGR valve to be there; check out the temperature sensor in view of cold running problems; rebooting ECU may help as new MAF fitted....

tinytim,

Thanks for you reply. I have paid a visit to a local Fiat Independent today, and he says that he'll put mony on it that it's the EGR valve. Unfortunately you can't blank it off as apparently it will go into "limp home" mode. He quoted £70 for a recon one from Fiat, and £80 to fit it (+VAT!) so as I can't be bothered getting my hands too dirty these days, and it's such a b*****d to do on the 1.3 I'm tempted.

doubt it would go into limp home mode as ecu would have no way of sensing that; I put a piece of stainless steel (from old sink) in the manifold side of the EGR valve on my JTD no problem; I kept the electricals connected....
