Hello

I am new to this forum as I was hoping someone could help me, and a friend suggested this site saying there were lots of knowledgeable people on here :).

I was in the park yesterday and my handbag was stolen with my little Punto's keys inside.
I bought the car with just one key, so I got another cut but it doesn't have the transponder thingy and now I cant start my baby  as my spare is just the metal part.

I have heard you can program a new key from my cars brain, but also that it could cost over £600! Eeek I'm a student!

My car is a 2000 model Punto 1.2, so if any of you kind people know better I would love to hear what you know.

Thank you
Polly x

Only few places will do them. or fiat.

TBH, probably better of getting a complete lockset/ecu/fusebox of ebay as someone will have access to your car even if they cant start it once reprogrammed, also fiat will charge a lot and you'll probably have to wait awhile.

A Auto locksmith maybe able to do them but I'd imagine they'd want more than a replacement lockset/ecu will cost.

Also I'd open the bonnet and remove the airfilter and then remove the ecu as I assume your address would be on something in the bag.

Where abouts are you?

Thank You Guys

I really appreciate your help in getting my baby back on the road.

Some have suggested a whole replacement of the locks, ecu and things so I looked on Ebay, but I don't have a clue what I actually need . Music degrees don't teach you much about cars.... :p

Here is a link to an auction which is what I thing you are referring to:

I live and study in Northampton so if you know some good garages around here that could fit it fairly cheap I would love to know :).

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful weather!

Thankies x

This is where you need a good local mechanic. Fiat will charge you for a complete set of lock barrels, immobiliser/ECU keys etc. Keys alone are €90 each from a dealer (I'm in Ireland and went through this whole mess with a Stilo) Other option (this is where your mechanic comes in) is to lift all the parts from a scrapped Punto and refit them to yours. This will be a much cheaper option but you have to source the donor car.

Either way you could be looking at the thick end of £500.

£600 is probably as much as the car is worth

Is there anyway you can bypass the immobiliser on these by flashing the ECU? Obviously, don't tell your insurance company....

As has already been said, you can order a pre-programmed key from the dealer based on your chassis number (Fiat UK keep hold of your CODE card). This should be no more than £150. Now this fixes your problem, but it does mean that someone is running around with a key that will both access and start your car. To be safe, you need to find a donor car complete with ECU, CODE box, keys, ignition barrel, door locks, boot lock and fuel cap. Swap out all these parts and it should all work. Do however note the chassis number of the donor vehicle, since you will require this number if you ever have to request keys from Fiat in the future.

When a new key is loaded in via diagnostics, only the keys present should be loaded in. ie the stolen one should not be included.
Its true someone can unlock the door, but breaking into a Punto is not that difficult anyway.
Tony.

Ooooooo I'm from Northampton! Not that this helps you much. if you go down to Motorvogue, they might be able to sort you out. I went down when my car blew a headgasket, they gave me a price and I then spoke to the managing director and he gave me a nice little discount. Always worth a try.

Or there's a little Italian car specialist around near The Racecourse that might be able to help you out.....

Good luck.

fitting time is 2.5 hours for complete lockset, at £50ph thats £125+lockset. Lockset includes keys and code card and i'm sure its around the £175 mark. This is alot less and realistic than some of the posts/quotes here.

I have never been very impressed with motor vouge but they arenclose to the avenue and they should be able to do a key

if you get the bus to avenue or if your not there already but i dont think music is

Then turn right out the front of the campus and walk down to the main road turn right again and then its just a little way down there on the other side of the road

Why not visit Fiat and see what they can do. At least they will do the job properly. Then key insurance is worth a look - £15 for £1500 worth of replacement key costs isn't a bad deal IMHO.

Is that just an insurance policy where a premium of £15 provides cover for up to £1500 to replace keys, locks, immo, etc.? (i.e. not the actual cost which will be much less). Probably a standard policy for any car.

Hi. I am from the bristol area. can certainly do it cheaper than that quote. I am an auto locksmith. If you do not live near Bristol then it is possible for me to do. but i would need your immobilizer and a lock. the best one being the boot lock. get in touch if you have any questions. thank you
