Can anyone tell me how you fit an alternator belt past the engine sensor on a 1.2 8v Mk1 60S? The belt is thicker than the gap! Is the sensor removable without upsetting the factory settings?

Any advice gratefully received.
Chris.

If its anything like the HGT, the accessory belt cannot be fitted with the tensioner in its slack position and the tensioner cannot be fitted with the belt in place.

The spring is very strong and access is poor. The safest DIY option is to put a spanner on the tensioner and use a jack with a socket extension bar to lift the spanner end. This compresses the tensioner spring and allows you to fit the belt. A very long spanner also works but only if you have the car on a garage lift - more working space.

Yeah its really difficult on a 1.2 8v fire.:bang::p Unbolt the crank sensor and pull it out, it only goes in one way. And there is no chance you will stuff it up, unless you cut the wire.

Many thanks for the advice. I've been away for a few days, so only just got round to fitting the belt. I loosened the three bolts on the outer pully enough for the belt to slip on. All ok now (y)
