i bought this mk2 few week back its had a NEW engine but i went to the scrapyard to get a new engine head to find that all the mk2's had a camshaft position sensor mine doesn't so i think the engine in my car is a MK1 1.2 8v engine  could i take the head of the mk2 and put it on the mk1 engine ?? and then plug the sensor in i haven't seen the sensor unplugged anywere under the bonnet unless i find it tucked away somewere!! its a 2000 plate

WHAT CAN I DO??

Is the existing engine a 8v or 16v? Some 16vs have cam position sensors and others don't.

Your post is confusing..

What's wrong with your engine the needs the head swapped over? Looks like the cam position sensor is located in the cam cover. Just swap the cam pulley and the cam cover over.

its W reg year 2000 but a bit of the engine has snapped and i can see some of the timing belt and it has writing on the top of the engine so i wanted to get a new one so i went to the scrapyard to get a new top but when i was unbolting it i noticed that there was a sensor near the oil plug (were you put oil) then i looked at my engine and mine didnt have one i was taking it off a 1.2 2002 8v punto and mine is a 1.2 2000 8v so were would i get a new cover? i would need to put a new rocker gasket on but i just want to replace it

are you referring to replacing the rocker cover or the cylinder head? What has "snapped"? If the cambelt has snapped it just needs to be replaced that's all. The 1.2 8v does not get damaged if the cambelt snaps, neither does it have a carb it has a throttle body with a single point injector; forget about the camshaft sensor just explain to us clearly what the problem is......

Sounds like a timing cover has broken. Just swap the timing cover over.

Hi mate,

the later engines had the camshaft sensor, the earlier ones didn't. You originally had the earlier engine in your car and therefore the ecu does not require an input from a cam shaft sensor. Therefore just blank it off, and your car will run fine.

If it was the other way around however, and you were trying to fit a earlier head (without cam sensor) to a later model ecu (requiring cam sensor input) then it wouldn't work.

However as has already been said, it sounds like just the timing belt cover needs replacing, not the head.

Hope that helps,
Alan

nooo the timing belt cover is fine (y) its mad i know a bit about cars and in all the time i have messed around i have never seen a engine snapped ANYWERE its right in the corner i will have to take pictures and show you but near the oil cap a piece of the engine has snapped :S thats why i can see the timing belt thats why i want to get a new engine cover!! anyone get me?

Early mk2's didn't run a cam sensor ('99 V- '01 Y). Just because it isn't there doesn't mean you've got a mk1 lump.

If you want a replacement cam cover, it'll have to be from an early mk2 like yours. If you fit a later cover you'll need to blank the hole and fit the matching top timing belt cover.

cheers for the replies guys!! just me letting the stress get the better of me i think the car just needs a good oil service, because its all start to come together now they have put the new engine in left the oil and spark plugs in (the spark plugs were just........ ridiculous ive never seen a set that bad before in my life!!!) and then hopefully i can pick up from there!!
