Technical AAAAAAHHHHHH! Gearbox made crunchy crash sound and went!!! how much?

Hi

sorry to bother you all but, my car made a crunchy sound like the glass smashing almost lots of fluid came out! it would not move even when pushed until it made this noise? (all in middle of main road)
the aa man said something about a diff? and planets??? i def need a new gearbox... its a 55reg punto 1.2 8v sport active how much do you think it will cost?

Does sound like the old "diff ring gear coming away" Sometimes it happens gradually and you spend money changing the clutch, only to find that's not the problem, and sometimes it goes catastrophically, like yours!

A re-con box shouldn't cost you more than £400, with maybe £200 for fitting. You could probably get it ar cheaper if you really try hard.

Don't be tempted to put a second hand, non-recon box in. The chances are it will head the same way in fairly short order!

Like Scoob said, most likely the ring gear on the diff. I assume the AA man was talking about planetary gears, but they're something completely different. Is your car auto or manual? (Only autos have planetary gears.)

A used box should be OK but there is always a risk with any used parts. Its best if you can drive the car before taking out the box but how likely is that?

A long time ago, I had a Metro gearbox/diff fail. The idler gears pin in the differential that sits between the two drive shafts had fallen out. I started around a tight bend in a street and it went through the casing with such a bang people though a gun had gone off. Exit another Metro.

Emzy2010 you should be able to pick up a box out of a mk1 punto for about £75 quid, should be able to find some one to fit it including new clutch kit for £200
