Is the error "The airbag activating circuit indicated by the code is shorted to ground. This may be caused by a faulty circuit, Squib, or ECU."?

The squib is the small explosive device that inflates the airbag. Did it say which airbag activating circuit or give a code that might reference driver's or passenger's airbag?

that is the exact message

drivers air bag i believe

where should i start?

Disconnect the battery and wait ten mins. Access the airbag (this depends on what sort of steering wheel you have - first step is usually to remove fixings from the rear of the wheel).

The electrical connection between the wheel (rotating) and the column (fixed) is via what's called the clock spring. This is essentially a coiled ribbon cable so that the wheel can rotate with respect to the column without needing wiping contacts. It's important not to rotate the clockspring when it is not engaged with the wheel (this is because it's designed to be able to rotate enough in each direction without stretching/breaking it).

Check/clean the various connections. Note that the wires for the horn push also go down the clockspring.

If you inadvertently reconnect the battery before reconnecting the airbag it will log a fault (but you can clear that now you have the technology).

cheers fella:), i'll give it a go tomorrow and let you know how i get on

also on another note..the link from pin 3 to 7 is this just for the airbag fix or a general fix to convert the lead from vag to fiat?

It's just for the airbag fix.

To use the lead just for engine ECU, no mod required. I presume that pin 7 is therefore common to VAG also for engine ECU. Fiat uses pin 3 for its airbags. Don't know whether VAG have their airbags on pin 7 (with engine ECU) or another pin.

Fiat also has ABS on pin 1. FiatECUScan site also says connect to pin 9 for electric steering but I thought that was done via CAN-bus (requiring an ELM or similar interface - VAG-COM KKL leads don't do CAN).

Other data I have says auto gearbox is also on pin 7.
