Technical Will this sealant work? OIL LEAK

1.1 Punto 55 on a 97 P plate.
Oil leak.
Rocker Cover Gasket done.
Sump already sealed by previous owner.

Im thinking of removing the sump, and resealing it again, just incase the oil is coming from there.

I have some sikaflex 221.
Would this be ok to use?
or
Will I have to buy some RTV?

Hi Mate,

Mk 1 punto's are notorious for rocker cover seal's weeping oil. How did you replace it, with another gasket or with gasket and liquid sealent?

If it was only a gasket it was replaced with, I'd put money on it being the rocker cover gasket, then it run's down the engine and on floor (It did this on the left hand side of my engine, and dripped from sump and oil filter area off the tdc/rpm bracket). Is there wet fresh oil around the top of the engine?

I had one go on mine(p reg 55s), It was'nt until sombody pointed this out to me, then it was fixed. It looked to me as if the oil sump was leaking, and after kept trying to find the cause, it was the rocker cover lol

Silicone sealers are not a good idea with rubber (or any soft) gasket - they behave like grease when wet and cause the gasket to slide out. Another issue is that fragments of cured silicone sealant can clog engine oil galleries.

Unless the workshop manual specifically says to use it I avoid the stuff.

If you use any sealant at all - and often there is no need - use something like Hylomar or an anaerobic gasket sealant from Loctite. The latter is expensive but extremely good. The big advantages are that it wont clog the oil ways as it only cures when squashed into a joint and its sticky so wont behave like a grease when its wet.

I agree with above but I would also say that the rocker cover tends to leak near the corners. A blob of gasket sealant where the gasket changes direction/height (all 4 corners and the radii where it goes over the cam) usually keeps the thing good for a while. Use sparingly
