Hi all! i hope ive posted in the right place for my question!
I was driving around in my mk1 punto sport this morning without a problem, i stopped to talk to a friend, when i started the car to pull away it wouldnt let me select any gear at all :( its not making no sound.. just wont go in, but a loud grinding comes when i try to go into reverse .. any help would be much appreciated :bang:

how would i be able to tell if its definatly the slave cylinder? and isit a tricky job??

If the gearbox is the same as a MK II, the slave cylinder sits on the top of the gearbox, under the battery tray and is held in by two 13mm bolts. It's a black plastic thing in a kinda diamond shape with a rubber hose attached to one end, and a little rod coming out the other end that pushes a lever.

Have someone press the clutch pedal while you watch the cylinder, if the lever moves the slave is working. (At least, to some extent.)

It's not hard or expensive to relpace.

Can you engage any gears with the engine off?

Hi all, thanks for your replys, since my last post we topped up with brake and clutch fluid and its working again, seems to be a leak somewhere :( grrr

Or the metal pipe that connects to the flexible above the slave cylinder. Brake and clutch use the same reservoir so dont drive if its leaking or you'll soon have air in the brakes or worse no brakes.

Wash any fluid off paint - its a great paint stripper. Treat stripped metal with Waxoyl or chain saw oil to stop corrosion.

The reservoir is partitioned inside so that a clutch cylinder/pipe leak doesn't take all the brake fluid away.
