Hi,

Was wondering if anybody had any ideas about the cause of my rear suspension making squeaking noises when driving over pot holes and speed bumps?

Do I need new shock absorbers?

Any help/advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

mate mine does same, it use to do it over pot holes and speed bump but recently got worse doin it just driving in straight line, i thort maybe shocker it was coming from passenger side rear.

I realised that my exhaust was also bangin against the car body, so i bort some new mountings and put them on my exhaust, the bangin stopped and the squeaking nopise stopped aswel, i think it might be exhaust touching somewhere, take a look at your mounts just to make sure, and grap the exhaust and give it a good shake to see if you can hear any banging or squeaks

It will almost certainly be the rear suspension bushes. If you lie under the car with your head underneath to the front of the rear wheel and get someone to bounce the car up and down you will see it in action. I cured mine with some spray grease from Halfords but you need to reapply it once a year or so. WD40 washes off too quickly.

I agree with Halmer,

I had a rear bush go on my rear left wheel, It used to sound as if the boot wasnt shut when going over any sort of bumps, Had that replaced and the noise stopped.

Somebody told me on here. To check (from what I remember) Jack the rear end up so the wheel is off the ground, Grab the wheel at 12 o clock and 6 o clock, and push & pull, if it moves even slightly the bush is worn. Kit can be brought off ebay, but its a pain to fit it :bang:

If I got that test wrong, Im sure sombody will correct me (y)

yeh do the 12 o colock and 6 o clock (top and bottom) as suggested then, do it from 3 o clock and 9 o clock (sides), then get a crow bar or summat simular and put it under the tyre and pull the wheel up and down with it (bar between bottom of tyre and ground and pull bar upwards to get the tyre to move)

make sure handbrake is off for all this, just support the front wheels by locking them with bricks and put the car in gear

How much would a set of rear suspension bushes cost to get supplied and fitted?

could also be rear trailing arms. get a mate to move the wheel why you lay underneath. If the arm moves side to side the a new arm kit is needed (about £10 from e-bay) can be a royal pain in the @rse to change though. If the arm moves with the subframe then subframe mounting bushes need changing. Not changed the bushes but have removed a rear subfram fairly easily.

... and I had a squeak on one side at the rear that turned out to be the shocker. It was worse when I had a passenger in the back. Judging by the earlier responses, your noise could be one of several things!

red.

It sounds like the rear axle radius bushes (These are the bushes on which the rear axle pivots.) Usually if they creak, bouncing the rear of the car will cause them to creak.

I've replaced a lot of these on Golfs and Audi A3s, as they are a common problem on these. The bushes for Golfs & A3s are £8-12 each (Trade price) and i used to charge 1.5-2 hours in labour to fit. I imagine that the prices for a Punto will be fairly similar.
