Punto idle control valve problem.

Hi guys! My 2002 1.2 8v Punto rev on it`s own, and some times cuts out completely. So i think idle control valve causes that problem, problem is that I cant find it. I think it is the black thing (wich is attached to throttle body) with 4 wires but it has no screws. So i dont know how to take it of?

Re: Punto idle control valve problem.

The idle valve stepper motor is integral to the throttle body - not removable separately (driver's side, 4-wires).

It's probably worth removing the throttle body and giving it a wash out if you suspect it.

Hi red! Stupid guestion but is "idle valve stepper motor" same thing than "idle control valve"? How I clean it when i take the throttle body of? Is Brake cleaning fluid ok to use or can i use wd-40?

Edit: I found that another topick. So i know now how i clean it.

Re: Punto idle control valve problem.

I cleaned my icv and that butterfly valve, but it didn`t solve my problem. So could someone suggest me what should I try next. The car still jams revs when I am accelerating, i don`t think it`s the throttle wire. Weird thing is that sometimes it work just fine, but most of the time it doesn`t.

Re: Punto idle control valve problem.

Hi Boom Driver,

The idle control valve is driven by a stepper motor. The ECU determines how many steps to move the motor and this determines how far the valve opens. The valve allows air to bypass the throttle butterfly at idle (i.e. when the butterfly is closed). Cleaning is a bit hit and miss.

You say that the problem is when accelerating whereas idle valve problems mainly occur when idling (there's a clue there somewhere). You say you don't think the throttle cable/butterfly is jamming but you ought at least prove it. You could do this by observation if the fault will show up when stationary (air cleaner removed). If you can get a code reader on it you can monitor the throttle position (there's a potentiometer that send the information back to the ECU) and also monitor the idle valve position (number of steps). See other threads on ECU readers if you want to go down that path.

When you say the engine revs, what sort of figures are you talking about? is this 1500-2000 rpm or is it going right up high?

I don`t have rev-counter in my Punto but it depends! Sometimes revs can jam up to 4000-5000rpm. Usually revs drop after few seconds but sometimes they stay there for eternity.
I have checked how throttle wire and butterfly valve works and I don`t see nothing unusual. Reason why I suspected ICV was that the car usually stalls when idling.
Thing I have noticed is that the car doesn`t work when it is cold/warm. But after driving I shut it down and let it be like one to four hours and after that it works like it should. But if you live it be like eight hours and trye to drive it = doesn`t work. So I`m kind of clueless!

Re: Punto idle control valve problem.

You probably need to get an ECU reader to look at some parameters like coolant temperature, throttle position, air temperature. Look in "Guides" under "Punto" for a cheap reader.

Re: Punto idle control valve problem.

Id say its the idle stepper motor

I had a problem similair on my mark 1 punto. If I was driving then come to a stop like at traffic lights, 9times out of 10. It would try idle then rev up and down, (Id guess between 1k -3k had no rev counter at time) then on it's last attempt it would just open throttle and go up and over to (at a guess) full revs, to the point Id turn the ignition and restart the engine.

Anyway, I replace the whole throttle body from another car at scrappy, and problem was sorted!

P.s : I did try carb cleaner with no luck. Only thing that sorted mine was another throttle body. If your in or around S-O-T try a scrappy called AVR I know they have got atleast 2 mk2's up there.

Hope that helps.

Dave
