Hi,

After driving the car there is a faint smell of burning, I have noticed a very small oil leak from the bolt on the plug which I'm going to sort soon and I assume this is the cause, but if it wasn't oil burning on the exhaust what other things could be causing a burning smell?

Its never smelt strongly or made me concerned about driving the car, it doesnt smell electrical etc.

Thanks

Popped into the local garage and they said its gearbox oil, I mentioned I had my clutch changed a few months ago and they said its probably the seal split around the drive shaft so its slowly leaking out.

Does that seem a reasonable diagnosis?

Well I was under the ramp with them and it looked like it was leaking from the drive shaft area and they only do tyres and batteries etc so it wouldn't be worth their while saying I have a gearbox leak but just wondered what you guys thoughts were?

I saw the oil was making its way onto the cat and onto the exhaust pipe its self so I assume thats whats causing the wiff of burning smell.

A driveshaft seal is easy enough to fix so garage labour costs wouldnt be too much.

Best get it to a garage because a dry gearbox will cost a whole load more when it goes t*ts up. Be thankful its not leaking from under the clutch bellhousing as that can quickly ruin the clutch.

How much is reasonable to replace the driveshaft seal?

I've got a quote but seemed a lot for the job.. £180 parts & labour inc vat

Call Shop4parts for drive shaft seals and components then you can work it out the costs for yourself. If the estimate was for a new driveshaft its probably not far out. If its just new seals then its expensive.
