My wife has 2004 Fiat Punto Sporting she has owned since new.

The car has served us well until we found out today during a service that the front subframe is corroded. This is not surface rust but severe rust in more than one area (i.e. there is actually a hole in it) that will ceratinly mean it will fail its next MOT, the rear subframe is also showing signs of corrosion but this is more surface rust than severe corrosion. The garage thought this was unusual as the car was only 6 years old and otherwise in very good condition. They suggested that the car must have been driven in a salty water environment but when we told them that we had owned tha car since new they were very suprised and think that this should not have happened in as little as 6 years.

It may not be relevant but whilst we have had two other strange things when having maintenence on the car. Firstly, when the original exhaust was replaced the exhaust centre found that the exhaust was not the one they expected on a Punto Sporting and said they would have to fit a replacement which is more expensive as the brackets were in different places. We didn't believe them and took it to another garage not mentioning what had happened. The second garage ordered the exhaust for a 2004 Punto Sporting and only when they went to fit it found it was not the same part. They eventually sourced a suitable part somehow using the car registration rather than their usual guide.

A similar thing happened when the rear brake shoes were changed. In short, the brake drums are not the ones you would expect to find on any Punto. The garage had to order larger brake shoes accordingly.

Our real problem is with the short lifespan of the subframe (cost of replacement over £900 as part approx £500 incl. Vat + labour approx £400). I thought I would mention the exhaust and brake issue in case anyone could throw any light on why our standard UK Punto Sporting bought Brand New from a Fiat dealership does not seem to be standard at all.

Has anyone else experience this rusty subframe problem on a relatively new Punto or other Fiat? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks beau, I didn't even consider the corrosion warranty. I'll check the documents when we get the car back from the garage.

By the way our car lived in southend-on-sea (as did we) for its first 3 years, perhaps it was the sea air. Now in Wales. Small world though.

Found a brochure from when we bought it. There was an 8 year Anti-Perforation Warranty but this only refers to bodywork.

I think I will call Fiat to discuss this anyway because I have spoken to a couple of people in the motortrade who say they wouldn't even consider checking a 6 year old car for corrosion of a subframe because it just shouldn't happen.

Could well be the sea air! Surely that counts as bodywork though?

I have had same problem with my punto having unexpected parts! Maybe fiat just gathered together any parts they could and mix and match them to make a few extra cars! (y)

The subframe should be made of a very high density pressed steel, and it sounds like yours was made of pig iron. I consider subframes as part of the bodywork, so claim on the anti-corrosion warranty, and kick up a right fuss if they won't replace it.

As for the parts, Fiat do have a habit of putting random parts from other models. Took me three attempts to get the right handbrake cable clips since my 1.1 petrol was fitted with 1.7 TD clips. I hope my insurance company don't class that as a modification beyond specification.

My 2004 just had an MOT and got an advisory for corrosion on

Front Subframe - I noticed all the paint on the subframe was peeling off with corrosion just before the MOT.

Rear axle corroded

Suspension corroded I think it is just the rear, but the front doesn't look too pretty either.

I cant believe the state of the car underneath, and I am thinking now I should take various bits off scrub them up and paint them.

Never had a modern car look this bad underneath.

A pity fourjobs didn't come back with an update on what he did with his car.

What does it matter the age of the original post if its all on topic

Because I was referring to the anti corrosion warranty in my response. The car was only 6 when the original post was made. (I didn't spot the registration year, only the fact the OP said it was a 6 YO car).

It would now be at least 10 years old, so making what I was posting irrelevant and pointless and no help to the OP what so ever.

:)

Ah right, fair play :p

LOL,

I just found this thread in google looking for "Punto front Subframes" Then I read my own post was in this thread

I was under the car today changing the oil, I noticed the front subframe is corroded through at the mounting points, definately will fail MOT so I'm looking on the internet to source a new one

3 months till the the MOT is due again.

Not impressed with the build quality of FIAT.
My 2004 Vaux Corsa has no rust on the subframe and the strength of the steel on the corsa subframe is vastly superior to the Fiat Punto.
