as my older post my punto mk2 ive had for 3 days has started tapping really bad, so as advised by other members ive took the rocker cover off and looked at the followers and they is not alot of oil in and around the camshaft so i started it up without the rocker cover on and no oil is coming up the engine or out of the oil rail. someone mentioned the the headgasket could be on wrong i must say it looks recent as i can see abit poking out near gearbox and still see abit of red on it. i know it had a cambelt on the 14 of this month but not the gasket. can anybody shed some light on this thanks kieron.

Bad days Kieron, you could try removing the oil spray bar and cleaning it out before considering checking the HG is the right way up...?

Its been known about... looks easy to get wrong if the job is rushed or done by someone who doesnt know, HG has "Alto" written on it which means Top or Up.

cheers im going to have a look on monday see whats up with it, any idea if i could put the followers out of a punto 60mk1 and camshaft if its nackerd?

You could use a small diameter rod like a gas
welding rod down the hole the oil bar fits into and see
how far it goes down.

John

cheers thats worth a blast so if the rod will go right down then it ok and if not its on wrong?. also i did notice the on the corner of the head near the front of the gearbox the gasket is poking out about 1cm is this right. thanks again

if its been run with no oil in the top end, then the cam bearings are likely to be damaged - and they're part of the head afaik - making the top end scrap.

if it has been its about 100mile max but probably still worn it out

Poking something down there would prove nothing, the holes are offset (hence the slot in the gasket, which will be at the back instead of the front on yours).

ive put a rod down the oil spray bar hole and it stops were the head meets the block will not go down any more. just a quicky the oil spray bar is it ment to go right down to the bottom on the head or rest in about 2mm as mine is like that. is the oil spray bar the only way oil gets to the cam and followers?

If the head has run dry for 100 miles - its scrap metal. Even 1 minute's dry running can cause permanent harm. The cam bearings run directly into the aluminium and the cam lobe tips are heavily loaded. You will almost certainly need a new top end.

If the engine is quite old you'be be better off putting in a used engine and replace the clutch while you have it all opened up.

There is a way of checking the headgasket (if its a genuine one) without removing it, there is a tag which is clearly visible, but for the life of me I cant remember which corner its visible in, if one of the punto guys can check and let the op know where to look it would be helpful.

all sorted head gasket was on upside down so fitted a new one and was lots of oil over the cams. but its ruind the camshaft and followers but fitted a cam and follers from a 40k top end and runs sweet. god knows how someone can get a headgasket on wrong

I'm amazed the camshaft bearings are not gouged out.

yes they were gouged out changed them too they shell bearings were fooked here is a picture
