Firstly i will apologise on bringing up this subject again, but i really dont no what to do!!

ive had my 2000 mk2 sporting for nearly a year now, and since ive had it when ever ive hit full lock i loose my power steering n the light comes on, but id just turn it off then back on again and it would be fine (and just try avoid hitting it on full lock) More recently it has started to go when driving along, usually round corners or when i go over a big pot hole.

So i need to get it sorted, ive read every thin in the guide and im unsure on what route to go down.

Theres a guy on ebay doing recon column motors (6 month garantee) and will come to me and fit a new motor for £200.

Will this fix the problem??????????????

Or will i need the entire steering column? should i just go straight to fiat?? Im sknit at the min and whant to get it fixed cheap first time, i cant afford to trial n error with it.

Help will be GREATLY appriciated

Cheers:)

It sounds very cheap, but the recent thread discussed a fix involving soldering some dry joints on the circuit board - even cheaper. Scroll back a week or so and have a look.

yeah i read about that, i no i wouldnt be able to do it, im useless at stuff like that! (n)

I just wanna know if people think i should get a new/recon column fitted or could i just get away with a new motor??

He's offering as warranty which should be good. I guess its down to how you feel about him when you meet him.

The alternatives seem to be at least £200 plus fitting and probably no warranty. You could post his details on here and see if he's happy to discuss his service - if that's allowed.

yeah could do, i just dont wanna fork out £200 on a motor for it not to fix the problem.

Western power steering on ebay are selling a recon column (2 year warranty) for £190 delivered. Which sounds good, then its just the fitting charge. so still dont no what to do.

Should i just spend abit more n get the whole column done? What to people reckon?

Yes a weak battery will also pull up the steering light. Once the steering relay trips it wont reset until you restart the car.

2 years warranty is better and fitting cost cant be that bad - can it? Others will know the answer to that one.

Having now read other threads we think the problem we had could of been battery related--- we started the car (which doesnt always start first time) and had the headlights, wipers etc all going at the same time and its almost as if there wasnt enough left to operate the electric power steering.
we stopped the car, switched off the engine and started it up again and the power steering kicked in straight away and has been fine ever since.(about a week ago)
The strange thing though is i put a battery tester (from lidl) on the battery and it showed it was fully charged (green light)---could the battery still be faulty-----we have had this 02 car now for onlly a couple
of months and dont know how old the battery is----- it could be 8 years old and need replacing.
Also the digital clock will not retain the correct time--------could this be a clue?

Yeah il test the battery out, ive never had any electric problems with it tho, starts first time etc etc, ive got a big sub and amp in the boot, so maybe that could be draining the battery, any way... its gotta be worth testing so im gonna do it at the weekend.

Does any 1 no if a OBD2 code reader will plug into my punto?? my mate has got 1 and would save me taking it to a garage to the codes read.

My battery had an internal short so was scrap.

It was stone dead flat but after 10 mins driving, the Bosch battery tester said all was fine just a bit discharged. It said there was 30% in there.

30% after 10 mins = max charge after 30 mins so in reality it had no useful capacity. In anycase the short kicked in so there ws no doubt. I looked at the cheaper batts, but the elecrical load can be heavy when the gennie isnt generating so went for the Bosch Silver 440 amps.

I appreciate your comments, but did your digital clock also play up by not keeping time after a reset.
We are getting this and apparently can be a sign of a battery not keeping enough charge for starting the car, operating headlights, wipers, heating etc and also kicking in the power steering.
