after worrying / wondering and pondering whether to attempt changing my glow plugs on a 55 plate diesel 1.3 JTD Punto - I did it.
Basically the yellow coil warning light came on and flashed for 30 seconds before going off. The car has done 80.000 miles.
I looked at this forum for some advice but......
A quick guide for simpletons like me- bosch ones from Halfords £50. Dont get cheap rubbish, fiat quoted £88.
1. Disconnect battery
2. Unscrew two bolts on the big plastic bit on top (Head Cover), you need a longish allen key for this, a T bar even better.
3. The plastic head cover is held to the rear of it with a little knob in a rubber hole, slide this out of the hole. The whole thing will lift off, you need to take the large heater hose at the front out of its clip and undo the hose to the right of the plastic. (no need to disconnect any electrics at this point).
4. Swing the plastic cover out of the way exposing the plugs and cables
5. The cable pops off the plugs just like LT leads off spark plugs would.
6. You need a long 8mm socket to unsrew the plugs.
7. Recommended you put some glow plug grease on the thread before replacing, re tighten to finger tight then approx 1/8th turn to tighten up.
8. Replace all other bits
My plugs were knackered, in fact 3 of the 4 had lost about 1cm in length!! and very very carbonised
Upon start up the warning light may still flash until you have been on a couple of runs to allow the ecu to reset. Took me about an hour all together and saved me over £100. Happy days
I hope this helps someone like me out there..
