Hi guys,

Have done a search here but didn't find out exactly what I needed to know, so sorry if I overlap with any previously asked questions!

I have had a new head unit fitted into my Punto, but would like to also add a pair of 10cm rear speakers I've already bought to give me a bit more of a surround-sound feel (I need no advice on what speakers to get, or to swap out the front ones or anything, unless it's free, ta ;)).

Now, does the Punto already have speaker wiring into the boot? I've had a fiddle around under the carpet, and I've found one bundle of multicoloured wires and a single black cable on the passenger side near the rear seatbelt feeder. Neither came loose with a gentle tug, so are either of these my speaker wires, or just for the tail-lights? And if they are for the speaker, are spade connectors already on there?

Otherwise, how did any of you wire up your rears? I'm new to doing anything to my car and a bit too scared to mess something up...

Thanks!!!

Sara.

The punto should have two small speaker components in the boot. They are located in the top left and right under in small mounting surround. You can take these shabby things out easily with a screwdriver (think there are 4 screws on each speaker). Cant exactly remember thinking about it now if its possible just to disconect the wiring of the speakers and leave them in place. Anywhos once thats done you've got your wiring for the rear speakers. You might need to cut the adaptor off when you wire up the new speakers.

SlinK - There are no speakers in there already - there's a sort of bracket with plastic mesh on top where speakers are obviously supposed to go, just no obvious wires. My Punto is very very standard, no extras, so I don't think there ever were rear speakers.

mintass11 - Nice mate, but I have got myself speakers specially to fit the existing (but empty!) brackets. Where do the lines come from, those you've trailed in from the sides? Did you lay them all the way from your HU? Or were they coming from under the boot carpet?

Bump - had hoped this'd be an easyish question to answer...

Rephrase: What do the wires to the rear speakers look like?
Also: Where do they trail into the boot from?

i used the existing bracket things ill go take a pic n show u! give me 5 mins!

Thanks mate :)

I'm starting to suspect I'm going to have to lay my own wiring... :(

Yep, just realised that now.

Pulled out the HU and looked at the speaker connector from the car - which only has connections on the front speaker terminals.

So, got any tips on how to lay em? Never done it before, where under the dash can I reach up to add wires to the connector? OMG this is going to be difficult, or expensive... Halford quoted £34.99 to fit the speakers, but would that include the wire laying, and is that a rip off?

I might be able to get the boyfriend to help me do it for a favour or two ;)

damn i like the sound of that :p Should be my gf seems that you give favours for nothing (y)

This is quite hard to explain on here and quite fiddly routing the new wire!
(3dr Punto)
The way i'd do it would be to connect up the new speaker wire to the headunit and thread it down from there (Probably the hardest part) You could send down both wires together, towards the passenger side taking the glove box out to make it easier. Pull the carpet back (theres a plastic plug holding it in place near the passenger door, just pull it out) Lay the wires under it.

Then route them under the plastic trim that you step over to get into the car (scuff plate sore of thing) This trim is easy to remove just a few screws then pull pretty hard. Route the wire under there then thread it up through another piece of trim going towards the back seats. From there just send them towards the rear speakers in the neatest way possible........The wire for the speakers on the drivers side of the car could just be sent under the seats then up to the other speaker.

Make sure once youve connected the wires to the headunit, you tape the wires together so theyre easier to thread through the pieces of trim ;)

I could take some pics of where abouts to route it on a 3dr Punto, if it would help.

wolfracepunto - that'd be amazing if you could spare the time to take some pics for me! No naughty favours I'm afraid but I'd be eternally grateful! Very very helpful post too :D

How easy is it to add wires into the black connector thingummy? I'm fine with soldering, but do I need some specific ends?

The rest of you - the BF gets favours for free too, cos otherwise I'd feel guilty about what he gives me! Hehehheehehe...

 No naughty favours?? Gutted! Oh well i've done the pics anyway, I must be feeling very bored/helpful....

I cant really take any pics of routing the wire from the headunit, so ur on your own with that one. Youve just gotta fiddle about with it for ages until you can reach it from under the glovebox.

Arrows are where to thread the wires and the plug circled you need to get out to pull carpet back. Take the scuff plate off and thread the wire in that direction.

Take the wires up behind the other bit of trim, just past the seatbelt- fiddly aswell.

Thread the wires to the passenger side speakers up under the seats in the best was possible- I havnt done this so dont know how hard it is. Other arrow is for the drivers side speakers.

The pics are pretty crappy, but I hope they help you out a bit when you come to do it.

No crappiness there, that's wicked mate, thanks a million!!! :)

Just to quote a convo with the BF...
Him: Me thinks sarawallen.com should have a guide for adding rear speakers to a 2000 model punto ;)
