Hi All,

Couple of months ago we kept hearing a noise from the fan - took it to garage who (after ages cos they couldn't find the problem) said that it was getting stuck on something and they sprayed it with wd40 n assured us it should be fine for a bit. It was...but it's just started happening again and i'm wondering if it's something to do with everything else that's going wrong. We also noticed that the temperature gauge has been jumping over the last few days and that there has been excessive smoke (white) from the exhaust. Anyone have any ideas on what's wrong with it? We checked coolant and oil yesterday on someone elses advice and it all seem ok. It's a 1.2 ELX 51 Reg. ANY help/advice is appreciated.

Cheers!

Get a decent fan and motor from a scrappy. Sounds like yours is on its last legs. Very easy to fit yourself. Might explain the jumpy temperature readings if it's coming on late, not working properly, etc.

White smoke from exhaust may mean nothing in this kind of weather -- I'm getting white smoke from my mouth! If you want to be super-sure get a compression test done. Post the results.

The fan bearings can pack up causing the fan to turn slower than needed to actually cool the car.

Fingers gives good advise, when you are the scrappies spin the fan motor and feel for any 'gritiness' as it turns. If any, then discard and try another one.

Cheers

Check there is no air in the coolant, will cause it to overheat. Then the fan is on its highest setting if it gets too hot making it squeal. As for the compression test I have a tester if you want to do it yourself rather than a garage doing it. I see your from Manchester so won't be far from me

Had a noise on my wifes punto a few months back so i took the fan off (two minute job) so i could get right into it with wd40 and so far so good.(fan was fine if you hand spun it clockwise but could hear the bearrings if you spun it anti clockwise although i know it ll give up eventually so ill replace soon)

That said ...assuming white smoke is just cold weather then the temp fluctuation could be an issue with the fan and a new fan was the way to go as mentioned above (around £20.00 from breakers around my way)

Not wise to take chances with the fan(s). These engines will cook very easily (as will most modern cars).
