In the horrendous road conditions we've had in the last couple of days my old mrk.1 has performed flawlessly, even though it has been stressed immeasurably!
However at idle and at low speeds (below 20 MPH) I have noticed an increasing amount of fumes getting into the cabin. I think its related to ventilation - if I turn the fan off or set to recycle it goes away. So I'm thinking I've got an exhaust leak, possibly at the front. Since the manifold has never been removed, I wonder what the likelhood that this is leaking. (1.2 8v 75)

I was :) so I though it was the car in front, then diverted down a country lane on my own and it was the same.

bet your breather hose has perished/ruptured

on the back of the air box there is a pipe leading to the engine this is likely to be the cause

dependent on age they might be different

if it is split the hose is held on by one shot clips than can be opened with a set of carpenters pincers or cut off with a dremel

(use jublie clips to refit much easier)

if you have a proper old school motor factors you might be able to get some oil resistant pipe of the correct size for next to naff all

Thanks Andy.
From memory the breather pipe has one of those clips you've mentioned that attaches to the cam cover, the other end - is just pushed over the pipe that comes from the air box, without a clip fitted. Don't think it has split though, will have a look tomorrow.

I think that it is the crankcase breather pipe!!!.............

I have just replaced that item on my partners GP 1.4...........
About 8 quid from a dealer, and 10 mins to fit!!!
