ok took my car out for the first time since i bought it today, and noticed this engine control system light was on, on the dash. it was permanently lit. i came home and read the owners handbook and it says that this can be triggered if the key code can not be recognised. now when i bought the car it had just had the code reset and new key, probably due to lost keys etc. i have all receipts for this new key and card but there is no labour charge. i bought the car from a proper garage so i assume they knew what they were doing and just installed whatever themselves? is it possible that because they were not a fiat dealership they did not have the software to reset the light? also the manual says its ok to drive it with this light on? any help or advice guys. dont really want to fork out at fiat for them to just switch the light off.if i recall, im 99% sure the light was on when i got the car but as it was delivered to me i may or may not have noticed.

is it possible to do the reset thing on the car(2000 8v mk2) by disconnecting battery from negative for a bit then i could check if the light was still on after? i would also like to add that upon trying to start the car this morning the battery was flat (like an idiot i forgot to disconnect/run it it whilst i wasnt driving it).

short story of the day----had to get a tow rope and attach it to, of all things, a neighbours reliant robin 3 wheeler to pull it down the road.lol i was laughing so much i nearly forgot i was trying to bump it . i was a bit peeved when his car started straight away though lol. and ironically it was my car that had the "tax in post" notice on the dash not his like only fools and horses. when i bumped, my car took off and dragged his back end with it lol. you just couldnt write it could you lol

dont know if this flat battery has had any effect on it? once i had a run around in it the battery charged back up and started each time i went out in it.

If you have the card it should be possible for you to reprogram the key(s). A search should throw up the instructions.

But why not take it back, get them to do it?

no the key works fine, sorry if i made it unclear. i think the code was obtained by stonacre, but the invoice from them, to the garage i bought it from, had no metion of labour costs, so i can only imagine the garage then proceeded to input the correct code and had a new key made up (also by stoneacre) i was just wondering if this light was like the airbag light which needed resetting after a fault has occured with the ignition or whether it would automatically go out if it the problem was resolved if you catch my drift?

Hang on, I have no access to the Punto handbook, but surely there are two distinct warnings. One is for the ECU, the other for the key code? Driving with the first lit may cause damage, driving with the second lit will do no harm.

Disconnecting battery -ive may clear the fault code. If it pops up again, return to dealer.

i think the two lights are some how connected due to them both being ignition related. i understand that if there was a problem with the key/code then the code light would remain lit but the eobd light also reacts to the code but im just not sure how the EOBD light reacts after the code has been altered/reset/tampered with you see.whether it resets itself or it has to be reset?

The light should go off when the fault goes away, so if your is still on the fault is still there.

Bump starting a cat equipped car is not recommended, you could still have excess unbunt fuel in the exhaust causing the issue.

i know its not ideal however the car was facing uphill and i had no charger plus complete a trip i needed the car for so i didnt have much choice. so you think its possibe the light may come have come on after the sensor in the cat detected unburnt fuel?

Yup, possible. How far did you drive?

about 2 miles. not very far really. ill see if it has gone off when i go out in a bit as the petrol should have evaporated? would the light still stay lit until its cleared or will it clear when the problem has gone?
