hi again guys,

I am having a very big headache with my car, with lots of ongoing issues... but right now my biggest concern is that my oil is empty from all the leaks and stupidly I hadn't checked it in a little while so I don't know how long it has been empty... the oil light coming on on the dash made me realise I hadn't actually checked... anyway I am going to fill it up again tomorrow but am worried my engine might still seize and I can't afford a new engine!!

Could you please tell me if there is any way of knowing/checking if the engine is ok??

Thanks

Unless you strip it down, no you cant tell. However, make sure the oil level is ok and you wont suffer a seize. If you're having leaks, you better find out where they're from and get them sorted, otherwise you can wave goodbye to nights out as you'll be paying for oil to keep it topped up

The oil light comes on when there is a loss of pressure, not loss of quantity, although lack of oil could be one reason for lack of pressure.

It is oil pressure that keeps the moving metal parts apart, so loss of oil pressure means metal meeting metal.

If you switched the engine off the nanosecond the light came on and didn't start it again until refilled, there is a slight possibility you will have no damage.

Otherwise you will have some damage.

Cheers

Dont hold you breath on the engine being any good after that.

When my Vauxhaul oil pump failed I cut the ignition immediately, but the engine still knocked badly with a new pump. It was toast and the pump was a waste of money.

New Punto engines aren't mega bucks and deffo cheaper than a new car.
