Tonight driving home from work, my 52 plate punto starting making very strange noises while idle, didn't matter if I was in gear or not the noise was the same. It was a very loud noise and did sound as though the car was going to give up! It was a relief when I could move again and the noise would stop... any ideas?

Hey what sort of sound is it? metal on metal? a whirling? a grinding? needing some more info if you want more insight on the subject.

Its a whirring/fan/whistling kind of noise is the best way of describing it. Had a guy at work come out and look at it today and the rocker gasket has gone and is leaking oil so that could be it if its making the area around it moist. Especially as its intermittent.

Got it booked in Monday to be replaced along with the cambelt and water pump as they are due replacing too.

What is the oil level and has it changed significantly since last week?

It recently had a service, oil level is fine, its only a minor leak, as in residue around it.
