Hi new user here,I am hoping to pick some of your brains for some advice.
I have just bought a punto 1.2(2000) and i am getting a problem with electrics, basically the ignition 12v is not switching off after removing the key-the radio and any engaged switches such as window heater remain lit.
Now it looks like the car has been rewired for a new stereo system as there is a sub woofer unit in the back-all of it looks official fiat stuff.
My reckoning is that either someone had modified the wiring at the ignition switch or the wiring is wrong.
I used a multimeter to check the 12v.
Has anyone come across this before or have any advice.

cheers

start with the engine turned off. Disconnect the negative (black) lead from the battery. Use the amp meter on the meter to measure the current drain on the battery by puting the red terminal in the fused amp hole on the meter.

The place on end of the meter on the battery pole, and the other on the loose lead (you removed it from the battery).

If the drain is less than, say, 0.2 amps I wouldn't worry at all, you battery will be fine.

Note if the doors are open, the llighs in the car will be on, so make sure the doors (and boot) are closed!

If an engine is well serviced and starts easily, and old battery can have a surprisingly small charge capacity so any drain from (a new) radio or interior light quickly sends it flat.

When it's flat, try an Optimate type trickle/conditioning charger on the battery. If its showing green after only a few hours the battery is probably on its way out. These things only give about 1/2 amp so should take many hours even days to fully charge a flat car battery.

They are great for recovering over discharged batts and keeping a full batt topped up.

the battery seems to be the problem rather than the wiring, changed the battery and now all seems ok-no significant current drain registered on the multimeter
now i have another problem:confused:
