I have a Punto HGT, randomly when pressing the break pedal
the bulb warning light comes on. Release the brake and press again ... no light.
(All bulbs working OK by the way)

Is this a known problem with the Punto, it's been back to the dealer twice already! who have fiddled ... changed bulbs ...scratched ass.... earthed stuff ... scratched head .... problem hasn't gone away ... for me anyway.

Any suggestions/information??

Thanks in advance

I had a similiar problem on my 53 Sporting

It was only when I pressed the brake pedal and sometimes the airbag warning light flicked on then off and if I pressed the brake again the light didn't come on

Eventually it happened much more often still only when the brake pedal was pressed and then other wierd things happened on the instrument panel over a period of about 3 months

The eventual outcome was that the instrument cluster was faulty and was replaced (warranty) and now no problems

i've got the same on my V plate 1.2 8V ELX.....jus comes on randomly when i'm braking....release the pedal and press it again and it don't come on......strange?!?!??!

Hi, sorry no solutions but for info same happens on 2000 (W) 1.9 JTD ELX! All bulbs working but bulb failure lamp randomley comes on when breaking then not again when pressing the pedal for a second time! Wierd

This could be caused either by a faulty bulb or a bad connection. If it's too annoying for you then take each bulb out in turn, check the contacts and give it a flick before replacing it.

If this does not cure the fault then as before you may have a cluster fault or a bad wiring connection, virtually impossible to detect without a lot of time and effort.

Make sure That the bulbs are the correct wattage and are of a good quality. Make sure all connections are good. Make sure the earth to rear lights is secure. Located on the rear back panel. If still all else fails and no other lights on , body computer will proabaly be faulty.

Could anyone please tell me how to change out a rear brake bulb on my 2000 Fiat Sporting, I have checked the manual which just says to remove a hex type screw but i can't seem to access the rear light display. Do i need to remove all the plastic trim around the belt buckle. Appreciate anyone's help or is there any site which has pictures on how to do it. Thanks

Ok dont worry if the light only comes on intermittently when pressing the brake pedal. There is no fault. According to Fiat, the warning light comes on to let you know the circuit is being monitored, only when the light comes on every time or remains on is there an actual failure. This was only for early mk2 models and was basically down to software within the body computer. You dont have to change anything so dont worry.

Came across this few times with airbag light coming on with brake depressed, always new ignition switch cured the fault.

Ive got the same problem with mine, Doesnt happen all the time but notice it more when Ive just braked sharply and the next time I brake the light comes on but noticed more so when I brake going up a steep hill. I also have a lingering problem with my headlights turning off when I put full beam on but thats on a different post. Its been back to Fiat and athey find no problems with any wirings or bulbs  I wondered if the lights were loose and not attached to the car properly?!?

Each side there are 2 17mm hex nut things (never seen them anywhere else). There should be a plastic tool in the boot that you can use, or get a 17mm socket if you can't find it (or it wont turn them). One is up behind the rear setabelt thing inside the car, the other is inside the boot behind a flap of carpet. The Nearside one can only be got at by removing the sub (if fitted). Both must be undone before the lighte will come off. Then you can disconnect the wiring loom, followed by unscrewing 4 screws holing the back to the front. Identify the blown bulb and replace. Refit just the same as you too out the light.

As an electronic engineer (not automotive), who has worked with current sensing stuff, I have the understanding that the ECU will measure the current flowing through the bulbs to check they're OK. There can be a tollerance issue created by all manner of things (bad connections, high/low battery voltage, temperature, etc) that could trick the computer into thinking a bulb has gone. I think it checks soon after the bulb has gone on, so there's potential for a slow lighting bulb to recurrently fool the computer. I could be wrong on this, but when I have the bulb warning coming on regularly I check the lights! I don't think it works for the fronts though, just the rears... It's a useful thing to have, which not all cars do have.
