changing gear knob

I have a mk1 punto (pushes down for reverse gear) and want to change the gaiter and gear knob.

I have read through several posts on here but some say you just pull it, some say it needs cutting. Which is the best plan of action?

Do I need a special gear knob or is that just for the lift up gears on mk2?

thanks

Re: changing gear knob

On the mk2, the knob just pulls off- dont need to twist it or anything. Probably the same on the mk1.

If you push down to get reverse, it usually means the whole gearstick moves, not just the gearknob so a normal gearknob would most likely be needed.

Re: changing gear knob

you do have to cut it.

the standard gear knob is moulded you can cut it off using a hack saw make a cross cut along the middle and across then should come off easy enough.

MK1 puntos arent lift up reverse WR

Re: changing gear knob

I know theyre not lift up reverse, his post says so. I was saying he probably doesnt need a special gearknob after he's taken the old one off. But I didnt know you had to cut the old knob off

This cuttings of knobs sounds a bit sore, but anyhoo I'm considering buying the gear knob in the pic below, anyone have any idea if there are any cables or anything for the lights? Any more info would be appreciated.

Re: changing gear knob

I belive there's a cable from the gearknob that you need to hook up to a 12v supply, to run the led's.. shouldnt be too hard to hook up - just hiding the wire :P
I'm not certain as I've never seen nor used one but they need a supply from somwhere
