Why do my Mk2 Punto rear door checkstraps made a terrible scraping noise dry and a worse one greased please?

check straps?
Hi If at some time in the past the door was forced to its limit , say on a windy day ,the strap could be nackered.Not a big job to replace or try adjusting.Why do my Mk2 Punto rear door checkstraps made a terrible scraping noise dry and a worse one greased please?
