The power steering light and engine warning light came on together over the weekend on my 2003 1.2 punto. I've had the power steering light come on before (and go off) and from reading other postings, assume this has to do with the common fault of the steering column (but am reluctant to pay to get it fixed just yet) but I've never had the engine warning light come on before and wonder if this is due to the power steering light coming on (as they came on at the same time) or whether it is a separate fault and was just coincidence that it came on when the power steering failed. The performance of the car doesn't seem all that different (maybe a little more sluggish uphill but then that could just be psychological because of the warning light!). The warning light has now gone off (and the power steering is working again) but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and whether I should get a diagnostic check done just to make sure? Any ideas?

Try giving the battery a good charge up, or replace it if its 5 or 6 years old.

Ive had a similar issue. If I turn my steering wheel all the way to the right the power steering fails and I get the steering warning light come on. Restarting the engine puts the power steering back on.

I was told to take it to a auto electrician to get the ECU code read and then go from there but its possible it will need the column replacing.

Im starting to wish I never bought a Punto and went for the Corsa now :(

All cars have faults and an ECU check isnt expensive.

For example, my friend has a vauxhaul and all of the brake pipes have to be replaced (rusty) because the factory removed plastic coat from the pipes where joints and fittings were attached.

Corsa has leccy steering too... the same leccy steering I think.

Ahh with you!
Fortunatly on my issue, id saved all the money to buy the car and ive got my Brava to sell now so the money I get on that can go towards fixing the problem. Im gonna stick mine in for an early MOT too and get anything else sorted whilst I have the money.
The MOT due dats is 21st December - not a good date!:shakehead:

So do you think that the ECU light coming on at the same time as the power steering fault was just a coincidence - i.e. that the two are unrelated and that I could a problem with the engine? The light has gone off and not come back off since - do you think its safe to leave it and wait to see if it comes on again?

As I said before its worth checking the battery, as the steering is electric and low voltage will casue it issues. That could also cause the ECU to throw up erroneous errors... as a low cost option its worth a try, especially if the battery is more than 4 or 5 years old.

If the battery is suspect, its also worth checking the generator is delivering what it should. When the voltage regulators go, they can take the battery as well.
