i have a 2000 fiat punto 1.2 16v automatic, has recently broken down with the fault code 'p1691 engine cut off from controller' anyone know what this means?

car is is an absolute pig to start and when it does revs upto around 3000-3500rpm for a couple of seconds then dies. never seen the code before, anyone shed any light on this??
