I've looked at a 2000 Punto which has the air bag warning light on. The bloke says it was reset by the garage and all was fine for a while but now its back. :(

I imagine its a wiring fault but could it be something more serious like one of the ECUs on the blink.

It could be as something as minor such as something on your steering being changed like mine as that puts the light on

I was the airbag light. There was no seatbelt light coming on.

Am I worrying about nothing or could it indicate something mores serious.

under the seats there is the airbag switch.. i think its there so it knows if someone is sitting on the seat.. but if the cable has moved a tiny bit.. it sets the light off..
check it out.. look under your seats... think its a yellow wire

The wires under your chair would be for the side airbags that are mounted in the seats. The connectors that connect the seat to the body harness sometimes become loose or oxidated as suggested by Tony. Also the airbag lock on the passenger side is prone to misbehaving due to the same problems. Whatever you do you'll have to get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine to reset the airbag light, because even if you solve the problem it has to be reset with the machine before it will function properly again.

You could do this yourself. Just buy a 10euro VAG kkl-interface from China through ebay and download the free unidiag software. Perhaps I should write a how-to on this, because its really easy to do on a mk2. Then youll have to mod the cable which takes 5mins, hook it up to the car and your laptop on the other side... press connect ... read the error code. Then clean up the connectors on whichever side is not working properly, reconnect and clear the errorcodes.

Light goes out and will stay out if you did it right.

When i first got my punto it had 3 loose connections, 1 under the seat, 1 in the boot and one under the glove box. The car had all sorts of warning lights flashing (including the air bag one) and all was solved by wiggling the 3 loose connections. I think the airbag connection is under the seat so have a fiddle with the cables, make sure there connected properly :)

The problem with the Exclusion switch error (if that is the cause), is that replacing it may not cure the fault as there is a modified loom to correct the issue which is Dealer-fit only.

To All- Your Punto will only have airbag wiring under the seat IF you have side airbags, which 90% don't. No mk2 Punto has a passenger weight/presence sensor pad.

Any modification to the wiring (cutting/soldering/etc) could deem you liable to prosecution if your passenger dies from failure of their airbag to fire due to your tampering. Even Fiat insist that only DET's (top Tech's) carry out airbag repairs.

Anyway, whitesei- the fault could be down to numerous causes (ECU, vehicle battery, wiring, clockspring, airbag, etc) and without a diagnostic check it'll be hard to suggest the best course of action. If the garage looked at the fault he should have an invoice saying what the error code is. If not, make it a part of the deal that he'll knock-off the cost of the diagnostic charge from the car's price. :)

Will fall on deaf ears i'm afraid Danny:(

Thanks for all this folks. I wasnt aware of the prosecution issues of soldering airbag wires but frankly I wouldnt anyway because soldered stranded wires tend to snapwhere thew solder has wicked along.

I'll have a look at the connectors and see what I can find. Being used to bikes (which are far worse for corrosion) I'm also used to dealing with connectors that haven't ... connected.

I have the same problem air bag light is on to say that the airbags are deactivated (red light). I dont want to pay and get it reset if its just going to come back on after a while.

First my Injector light came on to indicate engine management problem but engine and injectors were fine and that went over night and airbag light came on the next day but airbag light wont seem to disappear.

Been on for about a month now.

Hi,

I saw that you said it's easy to get VAG kkl-interface from China for 10 euro. Can you show me or send a link where is that, so i can by. I have Brava 1.6 16V, made 1999. and my airbag light is on for some time. I manage to solve it, but after a while they turn on again. I know where is problem so i want to do it my self, so i need this equipment to have. Can you help me if it's not a problem for you. Greetings from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

did you ever do the how to on this?

I hadn't seen this thread but coincidentally, today I did a sort of "how to" under the banner "ECU (and airbag) tester for a tenner and a laptop"

My red airbag lights on!!! And I don't know why, the orange passenger one comes on every so often too! is it a big thing and how much would this cost to fix? :(

Hey Jodi,

Mine does it all the time, Was told it was nothing to be worried about... When mine comes on my mate who works for fiat comes round with his dianostics or whatever machine he uses! haha, and cancels the fault that is coming up, the light will then go off... Dont worry the airbag will still work.
