Punto 55s 1996

I've just (today) picked up my punto from having the head gasket replaced, and a new problem has now developed (probably not related) - erratic idling:
Once warm, it surges up and down, almost as if someone were lightly pumping the throttle.
I see from the forum this is not an uncommon prob - and some replies have suggested cleaning the Inlet Control Valve, or checking one of the heat sensors.
Can someone help me identify these - I've so far resisted getting the Haynes manual, as I didn't think I'd need it!
Thanks!

A good think to try might be some fuel injection cleaner in your fuel tank. I got something called Asta 3000 from QVC it cost £35 inc delivery but cured my non starting problems and juddering problems too.

The idle control valve is on the throttle body and could do with a wipe, my theory is that is a vacuum issue. Do you have one of these poxy eco-tek things fitted? if so then remove this, if not you have a leak somewhere else and might be worth replacing the tubing incase of a split somewhere..

some say its a lamda sensor on the exhaust and its giving a wrong reading on the mix and the ecu is trying to compensate but make the revs go mental.

this would be unrelated to your head but you can try....

I don't know - how do I tell i've got ab eco-tek thing> Is it a standard fiat thing?

Thanks for the replies

As per Lowtechguy's post, there will be a pipe somewhere that leads to the throttle body from the rocker cover. The purpose of this is to dump oil fumes into the inlet manifold so that they get burnt rather than vented freely. If this pipe has come off at either end, then the engine will be sucking in extra air and will be getting "confused". Does the car kangaroo when you try to accelerate?
